Werpeloh combines a historic village centre with distinctive buildings, an unusual mission museum and geological themes. Visitors choosing a stay to suit their interests can focus on village and architectural history, cultural history, or nature and geology.

Village Centre and Architectural History

The historic Brink village is arranged around a group of oak trees; small paths connect them and give the village centre a park-like character. Historic brick houses and later Gulfhaus houses shape the townscape. The village layout and house types complement the view of individual buildings.

The brick church was built between 1873 and 1876; its tower remains a local landmark. A modern round church was built in Werpeloh in 1971. Together, the two churches offer tangible points of reference for different architectural forms and periods. The comparison is easy to picture: on one side, the 19th-century brick church with its distinctive tower; on the other, the round church built in 1971.

The Batak House and Cultural Themes

The Batak House in Werpeloh is a mission museum dating from 1978. Its design is modelled on the stilt houses of the Batak people of Sumatra. The building thus combines distinctive architecture with a cultural theme that reaches beyond local architectural history. The museum presents Batak shadow theatre with wayang figures and artefacts relating to traditional medicine men. Visitors interested in cultural history will encounter both an architectural reference and selected exhibition themes.

Stone Circle and Geological Garden

The Werpeloh stone circle is located on Hoogen Klinken. At its centre is a five-tonne stone, surrounded by two rings, each with twelve large stones. This arrangement makes the stone circle a clearly defined archaeological site. To get there, drive from Werpeloh towards Wippingen and, after leaving the village, take the second farm road on the left to Hohenklinken. Check the road conditions before setting out.

Visiting and the Regional Context

The local heritage association introduces the local history museum and other sights in the area to guests and visitor groups. The association can arrange coffee and cake on request. Please arrange your visit and this service in advance. The archaeological landscape also extends beyond individual sights: the area around Werpeloh is home to numerous prehistoric stone and burial mounds.

In the wider Emsland destination, megalithic culture can also be explored on a broader scale. The Megalithic Culture Cycle Route is 390 kilometres long, runs between Osnabrück and Oldenburg, and connects more than 70 megalithic tombs; almost half of them are in the Emsland. These details put the topic in its regional context and do not describe a local circuit in Werpeloh. In the wider Emsland destination, cycling and hiking trails in Hümmling Nature Park pass information points at historic sites, megalithic tombs and Clemenswerth Baroque Palace.
