A Baroque palace ensemble and a Romanian Orthodox church built entirely of wood give Sögel two very different points of interest. The church is the first Romanian Orthodox church in Lower Saxony and can accommodate 200 worshippers standing; it is also the largest of its kind in Germany. Visits take place as part of a short guided tour. Clemenswerth Palace offers another way to explore the town’s history: the star-shaped Baroque ensemble with its extensive park is considered unique in Europe.
Clemenswerth Palace: architecture and programmes
The ensemble comprises eight pavilions, including a chapel, as well as a stable block and a belvedere. The complex dates from the 18th century and is exceptionally well preserved. The focus is therefore not just on a single palace building, but also on how the pavilions and other elements of the ensemble work together.
Clemenswerth Palace also offers special educational programmes. During a treasure hunt for adults, participants solve challenges at various points around the grounds to find a treasure chest containing a hunting trophy. Discover the town’s history
The European History Trail runs for about 3,500 metres through Sögel. Its 46 chronologically arranged steles begin at the market square near the tourist information office. Their sequence provides a timeline, while the trail explores history at various points around town.
In the centre of Sögel, the Forum Sögel e. V. history and future workshop presents history with regional and wider relevance through interactive exhibits to see, hear and experience. On a guided tour, you can learn how events in Germany affected life in the Hümmling region. The main topics are the Second World War and the lives of Sögel’s Jewish residents. The local history house offers another glimpse into the town’s past, including a Heuerhaus, a coach house and a stone bread oven. The park-like Fehnwiese meadow, with its pond, is a pleasant place for a stroll.
Routes and activities around Sögel
The Kurfürsten-Runde, just under eight kilometres long, starts at the Baroque hunting lodge Clemenswerth and passes through woodland and meadows, including along the Nordradde. For a cycling trip on a different scale, the Hümmlinger Megalith Tour is rated very easy and covers 55.2 kilometres. It takes three hours and 40 minutes and has a main starting point in Sögel. Other activities offer different ways to get moving. Groups can take horse-drawn wagon rides through the wooded Hümmling region around Sögel, with drinks on board and a sociable snack in the countryside. The Rot-Gold Sögel 1926 e. V. tennis club has seven outdoor courts. Guests can rent one of the three indoor courts on request, subject to availability.

The facilities at Waldbad Sögel, modernised in 2026, include a paddling pool, a non-swimmer pool and a swimming pool, two diving towers at one and three metres, a slide and a playground. Check the current opening hours when planning a specific day at the pool.
At the Sögel indoor shooting range, visitors can use laser rifles in the shooting cinema to fire at moving or stationary targets. The video screen measures about 10 by 3.5 metres; check current visitor information in advance. A dog exercise area of about 1,500 square metres is located in the Püttkesberge industrial estate, near the A + W Education Centre, at Püttkesberge 13, 49751 Sögel. The wider destination: Emsland
The Hümmling Nature Park covers around 580 square kilometres in the north-east of the Emsland district. Cycle and hiking trails run through the nature park, passing information stations, historic sites, megalithic tombs and the Baroque Clemenswerth Palace. The Crane Trail is another regional option: it leads about 2.5 kilometres into the Theikenmeer nature reserve. The return journey follows the same route, making the total walking distance about five kilometres. An observation platform offers panoramic views of Lake Theikenmeer and the Wehmer Dose moorland; there is also a birdwatching hut on the lakeshore.
