Those looking to combine cycling and culture in Salzbergen will find a clearly described circular route and a range of themes: local history, historic washing machines and firefighting technology. A few specific conditions are important when planning your visit.

Cycling and Landscape

The “Around Salzbergen” cycling tour starts in Salzbergen and returns to its starting point as a 28.60-kilometre circular route. Both its difficulty level and fitness requirement are rated very easy. Its length, circular format and rating provide a clear guide for planning your day. Along the way, the route passes the 42-hectare Steider Keienvenn nature reserve.

The section of the Ems Cycle Route in Salzbergen offers a different perspective, with views of the Emstal conservation area. Many cyclists consider this section one of the most scenic stages. On the circular route, the focus is on its length and difficulty rating; on the Ems Cycle Route, it is on the views across the protected landscape. The Salzbergen beekeepers’ association has also set up an educational bee trail on Am Emsradweg road.

Museums and Local History

The Salzbergen Exhibition Barn is used as a washing machine, geology and archaeology museum, as well as for special exhibitions. Historic washing machines are on permanent display; fossils and artefacts document the town’s prehistory and early history. The building itself is almost 300 years old. Until 1946, it served as a Heuerhaus, a traditional farm labourers’ house, on Mönning farm in Steide. The exhibition thus brings together everyday and technological history with evidence of the local past.

The Salzbergen Fire Brigade Museum has been closed since June 21, 2026, due to a move. Vehicles and exhibits are currently being transferred to the new building at Neuenkirchener StraĂźe 20; reopening is planned for spring 2027. Check the reopening status before visiting.

The fire brigade museum’s exhibition covers 800 square metres and illustrates the development of firefighting over the past 300 years. Exhibits include ladder and fire engines, turntable ladders, pressure pumps and portable fire pumps, breathing apparatus, and small equipment from different eras. More than 200 helmets from Germany and abroad are another highlight, including brass helmets, 19th-century leather helmets, Prussian spiked helmets and modern plastic helmets.

Gardens and Events

A narrow path winds past flowerbeds, flowers and shrubs in the Salzbergen Bible Garden. Small signs explain the herbs growing there. The path and signs bring visitors close to the plants and make the garden a quieter highlight alongside the museums and cycling options.

The garden at privately owned Gut Stovern opens to visitors once a month. Check dates and make bookings through the Salzbergen municipal administration; be sure to confirm that a visit is possible in advance. The traditional “Salt and Oil Market” also takes place at a fixed time: on the third weekend in June. It features market stalls, an entertainment programme and a Dutch market. Check the specific dates for your chosen year before travelling.
