Hilter Mill, St. Vitus Church and the outdoor swimming pool each offer something different in Lathen: architectural and technological history, a church history dating back to the Middle Ages, and a swimming pool with precisely specified dimensions. There is also a memorial site and a private collection in the surrounding area. The wider Emsland destination has further cultural and natural attractions, providing a broader setting than the offerings in Lathen itself.
History and culture in Lathen
Hilter Mill is a working historic building nearly 200 years old. Millers guide visitors through the mill, explain its technology and tell its story. Arrange your visit in advance. A guided tour focuses on both the building and the milling technology.
St. Vitus Church in Lathen has a history dating back to the Middle Ages. The official memorial to the victims of the Transrapid accident commemorates a different chapter of history. It is located below the track, not far from the Transrapid Visitor Centre. Two roughly hewn stones stand with a metal plaque bearing 23 crosses between them.
In the surrounding area, in Lathen-Niederlangen, miniWELTEN displays a private Playmobil collection of around 3,000 figures across 280 square metres. The focus is on the figures and how they are presented, not on local or mill history. Visiting times may change, so check the current schedule in advance.
Outdoor swimming and activities in the Samtgemeinde
Lathen outdoor swimming pool has a 25 × 11-metre swimming pool with a maximum water depth of 3.40 metres. It also has a 1-metre diving board, a 3-metre diving platform and a toddlers’ pool with water-spray fountains. Opening arrangements may vary by season; check the current opening hours before your visit.
Another activity is the 40-kilometre “Ross und Rad” circular route through the Samtgemeinde Lathen, combining cycling and horse riding. This is a different kind of outing from the outdoor pool: the route is a circuit, while the pool brings together specific swimming and diving facilities. Check local conditions before cycling.
The wider Emsland destination
The Emsland Route is a 395-kilometre circular route through five landscapes: Nördliches Emstal, Hümmling, Bourtanger Moor, Hasetal and Südliches Emsland. It is very well signposted, mostly flat, paved and free of motor traffic, making it particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. The route connects 19 towns; any town in Emsland along the route can serve as a starting or finishing point.
Hümmling Nature Park extends across around 580 square kilometres in the northeastern part of Emsland district. Cycling and hiking trails, with information stations along the way, pass historic sites, megalithic tombs and the Baroque Clemenswerth Palace. The palace park covers 42 hectares and includes the Gloriette, the garden pavilion of Elector Clemens August. The Theikenmeer circuit is one of the nature park’s trails that meets the German Hiking Association’s quality criteria.
The wider Emsland destination also includes the Crane Trail. It runs for about 2.5 kilometres into Theikenmeer Nature Reserve; the return is along the same route, making the total walking distance about five kilometres. An observation platform offers panoramic views of Lake Theikenmeer and the moorland of Wehmer Dose. There is also an observation hut on the lakeshore. This gives a clear idea of the Crane Trail’s length, while the Theikenmeer circuit is distinguished by meeting the relevant quality criteria.
