Kluse lies on the Ems. Two distinct themes stand out when planning a trip: historical art and church history on the one hand, and cycling through the river landscape on the other. St. George’s Church in Steinbild and a sandstone Madonna offer their own cultural and historical points of interest. At the same time, the Dörpen-East cycling route passes through Kluse, and you can explore the Ems landscape around the town by bike. You can therefore consider culture and landscape as separate focuses for your stay.

Historical Traces

St. George’s Church in Steinbild was first mentioned on 7 December 1304. A sandstone Madonna is dated to the years 1450 to 1480. The 1.40-metre-high figure combines Gothic ideas with Baroque forms; two distinct styles therefore meet in the sculpture. The Madonna was bricked in behind the high altar and fell into oblivion for more than 250 years. It was rediscovered and uncovered in 1885.

The dates answer different questions: 1304 marks the church’s first mention, while 1450 to 1480 is the date assigned to the sandstone Madonna. This makes it possible to distinguish the chronology of the church’s history from that of the artwork.

The Madonna of the boatmen was the patron saint of the Ems’s boatmen and fishermen. The religious history of the people who worked on the river is therefore also part of the Ems story.

Cycling and Camping

There are two different points of reference for cycling. The Dörpen-East cycling route passes through Kluse. You can also explore the Ems landscape around the town by bike. The first refers to a specific route, while the second describes a broader opportunity to enjoy the landscape. Whether you are looking for a named route to guide your trip or want to focus on the river landscape, you can consider these two perspectives separately.

Camping is associated with Kluse’s districts of Ahlen and Steinbild, giving your accommodation plans a distinct local connection. These overnight-stay options complement the cultural and cycling themes without being tied to a single attraction.

The Emsland as a Broader Travel Region

Within the broader Emsland travel region, HĂĽmmling Nature Park is a distinct natural and cultural area. It covers around 580 square kilometres in the northeastern part of the Emsland district. Cycling and hiking trails pass through the nature park and lead by historic sites, megalithic tombs and Clemenswerth Palace.

One specific hiking route in the Emsland is the Kranichpfad (Crane Trail). It runs about 2.5 kilometres into Theikenmeer Nature Reserve; the same route is used for the return, making the total walking distance around five kilometres. The Kranichpfad includes a viewing platform with panoramic views of Lake Theikenmeer and the Wehmer Dose moorland, as well as a birdwatching hut on the lakeshore. When planning your walk, count both the outward and return journeys, not just the distance to the nature reserve.

The regional highlights therefore differ: cycling, the river landscape and church history are defining themes in Kluse; the Kranichpfad offers a hiking option in the Emsland with a stated total distance and named viewpoints.
