At Saller Lake, Freren reveals its greener side: meadows and forests surround the lake. There are routes for cycling and walking around the water, while the Southern Emsland Nordic Fitness and Skiiking Park offers seven signposted routes. This gives you a range of ways to spend time outdoors—from walking trails to special sports activities.

Enjoy the outdoors at Saller Lake

The lake has a Kneipp water-treading facility, a mini-golf course and picnic areas. The Nordic Fitness and Skiiking Park combines inline skating and cross-country skiing, bringing a taste of winter sports even in summer. You can also try biathlon there using an ammunition-free laser shooting system. Together with the routes for cyclists and walkers, these activities make the local recreation area a varied destination: spend your time being active, taking a break by the water or trying one of these special sports.

The Holtpättken forest discovery trail offers another way to get to know the landscape. Children and adults can learn about how the landscape was formed, the work people do in the forest, the trees and the wildlife. QR codes provide access to audio features with short Low German texts and stories about Holtpättken. The trail thus combines nature topics with regional language and storytelling.

Culture and history in Freren

The Alte Molkerei cultural centre is home to several cultural offerings. The permanent exhibition “Lebenswege” is housed in the historic buildings of the former Brüne dairy, which is also home to the Samuel Manne Jewish History Workshop. The Alte Molkerei’s programme includes theatre, concerts, seminars, flea markets, cultural breakfasts, jazz brunches and arts and crafts markets. The Kulturkreis impulse Samtgemeinde Freren e.V. organises more than 50 events there each year; this number may change over time. If you plan to attend a specific event, check the date in advance.

The Freren local heritage centre also offers an insight into the town’s craft history: a crafts museum is housed in a renovated outbuilding. The Fridurenpatt circular trail traces Freren’s development from the medieval market town of “Friduren” to the town it is today. Another destination for a day trip is Gut Hange moated castle, a cultural monument in Freren.

Freren within the wider Emsland travel destination

For broader trip planning, it is worth looking at the wider Emsland travel destination. The Emsland Route is a 395-kilometre circular route through five landscape regions: Northern Ems Valley, Hümmling, Bourtanger Moor, Hasetal and Southern Emsland. The route connects 19 towns; towns along the route in Emsland can each serve as a starting or finishing point. It is very well signposted, mostly flat, paved and car-free, making it particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. These regional features apply to the Emsland Route and complement Freren’s own nature and cultural attractions with a broader planning framework.
