The town lake and Suletal Valley offer starting points for walks, while Rathloser Gehege is a place to experience woodland nature. Half-timbered houses and historic buildings in the town offer a glimpse into its history; museums, theatres and recurring cultural events add to the picture. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping these different focuses in mind: nature trails and local history are just as much a part of what Sulingen offers as opportunities for play and exercise.

Forest, Town Lake and Walks

Rathloser Gehege is Sulingen’s largest continuous woodland area. A woodland adventure trail leads through the forest. Small signs mark the stations and explain activities for each section. If you would like to combine a walk with activities like these, this offers a different option from a route by the water.

The 6.5-hectare town lake is a starting point for a walk through MĂĽhlenhofpark and the northern Suletal Valley, with its millpond. Suletal Valley is a nature reserve and can be reached from town in just a few minutes, passing historic buildings along the way. Sulingen thus offers two distinct nature experiences: the marked adventure trail in the forest and a walk from the town lake through the park and valley.

Activities and Facilities in the Park

Generationenpark offers a water playground with slides and a BMX cycling course. These facilities cater to different interests: here, it is all about water play or cycling, while the town lake and Suletal Valley are more associated with walking. Guided public cycling tours are also offered in Sulingen from April to October. Check the latest dates before your visit if you would like to plan a tour.

Half-Timbered Houses and Architectural History

The Alte Bürgermeisterei is one of the town’s oldest half-timbered houses. It was built around 1730, shortly after the great fire of 1719. The upper floor houses an exhibition on Sulingen’s history. The building dates from the period after the fire, and the exhibition focuses on the town’s history. Other half-timbered houses also shape the townscape around St. Nicolai Church.

St. Nicolai Church dates back to 1200. It acquired its present neo-Gothic appearance in the 19th century. The church thus brings together two distinct periods: its early history and its later neo-Gothic form. The half-timbered house on Meierdamm also has a special status: it is considered Sulingen’s oldest half-timbered house. Regular art exhibitions are held there.

Museum, Theatre and Recurring Cultural Events

The Heimatverein Sulingen e. V. museum by the town lake features a permanent exhibition on life and work in the Sulingen region in the past. It also hosts monthly special exhibitions on a range of topics. The permanent and special exhibitions differ not only in their schedules but also in that the changing themes regularly introduce new perspectives.

Sulingen Town Theatre presents contemporary and classic plays, music, comedy and cabaret. Another recurring cultural event is associated with St. Nicolai Church: the Sulingen Cultural Association (Kulturverein Sulingen e. V.) is a regular guest there between Christmas and New Year, with the reading “Höret gut zu!” and the “Konzert zwischen den Jahren.” Whether your interests lie more in theatre, visual arts or local history, Sulingen offers a range of cultural themes to explore.

More to Explore in the Diepholz District

The Diepholz district also offers a wider area to consider when choosing a destination: it encompasses two tourism regions and two nature parks. The following examples are attractions in the district, not features of Sulingen itself. The Dümmer Museum in Lembruch explores the nature, landscape and culture of Lake Dümmer in the past, present and future. Its “Life in the Water” research station explains the ecology of the Dümmer ecosystem in detail. The museum’s Stone Age exhibition at Lake Dümmer features original artefacts from 4000 to 2000 BC, along with reconstructions.

The Syke District Museum is the Diepholz district’s museum of cultural and everyday history. It presents everyday life from the Stone Age to the threshold of the present day. The Diepholz Moor Adventure Trail offers a different focus: it is around two kilometres long, has ten informative stations and brings the moor ecosystem to life in every season. These examples help distinguish between local history, museum themes and nature experiences across the district, without conflating regional attractions with sights in Sulingen.
