Sandy beaches, dunes, coastal heath and forest define Sahlenburg. Those who choose the area as a starting point will find various ways to explore the coastal landscape: trails through Wernerwald forest, nature tours and activities on the beach. When planning, it helps to consider these options according to their respective focus.

Coastal landscape between heath and Wadden Sea

In Sahlenburg, sandy beaches, dunes, heath and forest come together to form a coastal landscape. The Ice Age-shaped dune terrain with coastal heath slopes gently in some places and steeply in others as a geest cliff down to the salt marsh and thus to the Wadden Sea. This means that flatter stretches and more prominent changes in elevation lie side by side in the same landscape; heath, forest and Wadden Sea provide different points of reference for spending time outdoors.

From Sahlenburg, you can reach hiking trails through the coastal heaths via Wernerwald forest. Riding trails lead through the coastal heath and Wernerwald forest into the Wadden Sea in the direction of Neuwerk. Exploring the landscape on foot or on horseback therefore offers different options. Sahlenburg is also a starting point for mudflat hikes to Neuwerk.

A ride in a traditional mudflat horse-drawn carriage is another option for travelling to Neuwerk. Depending on the water level, the island can be reached by mudflat carriage from Cuxhaven-Sahlenburg; the connection usually runs once a day across the mudflats or over water. When planning a trip to Neuwerk, it is therefore worth checking the current departure times and the relevant connection.

Activities with different focuses

Sahlenburg is Cuxhaven’s largest area for surfing and kitesurfing. Those more interested in trails through the landscape will find hiking trails through the coastal heaths, as well as the riding trails mentioned above in the direction of Neuwerk. Cuxhaven Climbing Park offers something different: it is located right on Sahlenburg Beach at Wernerwaldstraße 2 and has 7 courses with 72 activities.

The Cuxhaven Wadden Sea Visitor Centre is located right on Sahlenburg Beach, between heath and Wadden Sea. Its exhibition spans three floors and explores the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and the Cuxhaven coastal heaths. Nature tours at the visitor centre offer the chance to experience the mudflats, salt marsh, geest cliff and coastal heath. The exhibition and tours thus provide two different ways to explore the same defining landscape features: a multi-storey exhibition and a guided exploration of nature.

The visitor centre can be reached from Cuxhaven railway station by bus route 1002 towards “Sahlenburg Am Strand”; bus route 1009 from Duhnen also runs towards “Sahlenburg Am Strand”. The Dünenbahn, described as a tourist attraction, also operates between Duhnen and Sahlenburg. The bus services mentioned run towards Sahlenburg Am Strand; check the current timetable before travelling.

Cuxhaven in a wider context

As a wider travel destination, Cuxhaven offers other distinct landscape features. The coastal heaths in the Cuxhaven area meet the Wadden Sea directly between the districts of Duhnen and Berensch. Around 900 hectares of Cuxhaven’s coastal heaths have been designated a nature reserve since December 2004. Their ecosystem provides a habitat for more than 200 endangered plant and animal species listed on the Red Lists of Lower Saxony or Germany. These details refer to Cuxhaven and its coastal heaths, not to any additional features in Sahlenburg.
