Discover Osten through its museums, local history and activities along the Oste. Local themes range from a collection of bottles from around the world and objects from everyday life to the technology of the suspension ferry. Outdoors, walking, cycling along the river and kayaking on the Oste offer different ways to explore.

Museums and local history

The Buddelmuseum Osten displays around 4,500 bottles from around the world. The Ostener Heimatmuseum features equipment, tools, household objects and furniture that reflect the area’s economic and everyday life. There are also exhibitions on local wildlife, hunting and fishing. This brings together a clearly defined bottle collection and several perspectives on life in the area.

De Fährstuv presents the technology and history of the Osten–Hemmoor suspension ferry. St. Petri Church in Osten offers another distinctive feature: it has a Baroque hall. Around 90 percent of the buildings in the historic town centre were built before 1914. A former mill has been converted into a cultural centre. These architectural landmarks add further perspectives on Osten’s history to the museum collections.

The suspension ferry and its routes

The Osten–Hemmoor suspension ferry is an open-air museum. Its 90-metre steel lattice girder spans the Oste; the gondola travels above the water without touching it. Museum rides are offered between April and October. Check operating details before your trip. Parking is available at the suspension ferry in Osten.

The structure forms part of both the Deutsche Fährstraße Bremervörde–Kiel and the Oste-Radweg Tostedt–Balje. These two route names place the suspension ferry in different contexts: one is a ferry route, the other a cycle route. It is therefore both a subject of technical interest and a point of connection to cycling and ferry history.

On foot, by bike and on the water

Explore Osten on foot through the Ostemarsch. For a more clearly defined circuit, try the Historischer Fährweg Osten–Hemmoor: this circular walking trail is approximately six kilometres long and passes through transport and cultural history. It starts and ends at St. Petri Church in Osten, Am Markt. Along the way, the route follows paved paths and roads.

Cycling along the river and kayaking on the Oste are other activities in Osten. By contrast, the ferry trail is described as a specific walking circuit with an approximate length and stated start and end points. This lets you choose between a clearly defined circular route and other ways of getting around, without treating the different options as the same route.

Within the wider Cuxhaven destination, the Cuxhaven Wadden Sea Visitor Centre presents information about the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and the Cuxhaven coastal heathlands across three floors. Nature tours let you experience mudflats, salt marshes, Geest cliffs and coastal heathland. These Cuxhaven themes form a distinct regional focus alongside Osten’s museums, local history and activities on the Oste.
