Loxstedt brings together architectural history, legends along cycling routes and nature activities at Stoteler Lake. Visitors planning a stay can tailor their days to their own interests: St. Mary’s combines architecture and wall paintings, the cycling routes differ in theme and starting options, and swimming and fishing at the lake each have their own conditions.

St. Mary’s: Brick Gothic church and wall paintings

St. Mary’s is a single-nave Gothic brick church. It was built as a chapel in 1371 and expanded into a parish church in 1451. The wall paintings from the early 15th century include the Loxstedt Dance of Death. The organ also has a special history: it is the last work by organ builder Matthias Schreiber.

For planning your visit: during the winter season, visits are possible during church services. Guided tours can be arranged through the parish office or church office. Check the current visiting and contact options in advance.

Cycling routes with different focuses

A 15 km route runs along the Weser dike in the Loxstedt area. There are also two cycling legends routes. Loxstedt Legends Trail 1 presents legends about robbers, dragon stones, and the hare and the hedgehog. It is signposted in both directions and can be started at any point along the route. The tour can be reached by regional train via Bremerhaven-Lehe; check connections and bicycle transport options before travelling.

Loxstedt Legends Trail 2 has starting points in Stotel and Dedesdorf. The routes therefore offer different ways to plan your day: the Weser dike route is listed as 15 km long; Legends Trail 1 focuses on its legends and flexible starting options, while Legends Trail 2 has starting points in two towns. Train connections and bicycle transport options may change; check these details before travelling.

Stoteler Lake: Swimming and fishing

Stoteler Lake borders the Stoteler Moor nature reserve. Swimming is possible at a beach supervised by the DLRG; supervision may vary by season. Before visiting, check whether any temporary swimming bans are in effect. Fishing is also available at the lake, but only for club members or with a day permit. The two activities therefore have different access requirements.
