A heritage-protected lime tree avenue with 168 trees follows a historic path through the row of trees to St. Peter and Paul Church in Cappel. The current church building dates from 1815; however, even after reconstruction, both long walls largely retain their Romanesque design. Thus, the construction date of the present building and the surviving Romanesque features come together.
Church, Organ and Memorials
The Arp Schnitger organ introduces another historical period: it was originally built in 1680 for St. John’s Monastery Church in Hamburg and was acquired by the parish of Cappel in 1816. Installing it in the church took two years. To this day, the organ remains intact and unchanged; the small parish lacked the funds for restoration or renovation. It can be used to perform Baroque compositions in their original form. Its origins, acquisition, installation and preservation tell different chapters in the instrument’s history.
Restored, large tomb slabs in the church provide another historical trace. They commemorate the former Fouwes family from Land Wursten. In this way, the history of an instrument originally built for Hamburg sits alongside the remembrance of a family from Land Wursten.
Wildlife Watching and Salt Marshes
The Cappel-Neufeld birdwatching tower stands in the area in front of the dike and offers views across the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site and the adjacent salt marshes. A guided salt marsh excursion in Cappel-Neufeld provides information about habitats influenced by salt water, plants such as glasswort and sea lavender, and their survival strategies. The view from the tower and the focus on individual habitats offer different perspectives. Check the excursion dates before travelling.
The Cappel Melkhus is a cycling rest stop with a public toilet and farm shop. It complements the cultural and nature-related topics with a practical place to stop, without requiring a particular route.
