Bad Bederkesa is best explored via Lake Bederkesa, also known as Beerster See. The lake, which covers around 200 hectares, lies next to the town and brings together landscape, walking and water sports as different ways to spend your stay. In the warmer months, the lake attracts water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. However, water conditions and operations can vary seasonally.

A navigable waterway connects Bad Bederkesa with Bremerhaven and Otterndorf. The lake is therefore not only a destination for activities on the water, but also part of a water connection between the towns. When planning, it is worth taking the season into account: water sports and nature visits are described as particularly suited to the warmer months, while conditions on the water and operations can vary seasonally.

On foot around Lake Bederkesa

If you would like to explore the lake on a longer walk, you can plan for the approximately seven-kilometre circular trail. Information boards cover the local flora and fauna as well as how the lake is used. They give the trail several themes rather than making it simply a route from one point to another: along the way, you can learn both about nature by the water and about how people use it.

Two viewpoints add to the route; there are also benches and two shelters. These offer various opportunities to pause along the way for a view or a break. No walking time is specified, so the approximate route length remains the concrete point of reference for planning. After storms or during maintenance work, check local conditions, as facilities along the route may change.

Mill views for a different perspective on the town

Another distinctive destination is the grain windmill on MĂĽhlenberg, a landmark of Bad Bederkesa. From its gallery, you can look out over the town and the lake. The mill offers a different focus from the circular trail: here, the view takes centre stage, while the route around the lake covers local flora and fauna as well as how the lake is used.

Access to the gallery may vary by season. If you want to make the view from the mill a definite part of your plans, check local access information beforehand. This keeps the view as a concrete possibility during your stay without assuming fixed opening hours or year-round access.

Water sports and rentals

Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent on Lake Bederkesa. Small motorboats and rafts are also among the rental options at the marina. Alongside the walking route, you can therefore choose activities on the water; each offers a different way to experience the lake. Availability, harbour access and seasonal maintenance may change. During the 2025 season, extensive renovation work affected use of the harbour. Before setting off, check current availability and harbour access with the local tourism provider.

When choosing what to do for the day, you can consider three specific perspectives: the circular trail combines exercise with information about nature and how the lake is used, the mill gallery offers views over Bad Bederkesa and the lake, and the rentals make water sports possible. The options have different focuses but all centre on the lake. Which one suits your stay depends on whether you prefer to walk, seek out a view or spend time on the water.
