Forest trails, heathland and a history of diatomite mining offer a variety of ways to explore Unterlüß. The quality hiking trail Heidschnuckenweg passes directly through the town; there are also destinations focused on forests, birdlife and regional history. When planning your trip, consider whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or delve deeper into nature and culture through exhibitions.

Nature Trails of Various Lengths

The Lünsholz nature reserve lies about two kilometres east of Unterlüß. This deciduous forest is made up mostly of structurally diverse beech woods. Another forest landscape can be explored on the W8 hike, “The Primeval Forest in the Lüß”: it leads through the extensive woodland southeast of Unterlüß and along the Lüß nature forest reserve to Lüßberg. At 130 metres, this is the highest elevation in the Südheide Nature Park.

The “Primeval Forest in the Lüß” Forest Adventure Trail offers a different kind of woodland walk. This family-friendly circular trail passes through the centuries-old Lüß Forest near Unterlüß in the Südheide Nature Park and is suitable for a half-day outing. From Unterlüß station, you can reach the trail on foot in about 20 minutes. Bus routes 260 from the direction of Hermannsburg and 261 from the direction of Faßberg go to the Lüßwald car park. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable before setting out. The nearest heathland is a 15-minute walk from Unterlüß.

The trails also vary in length: the Schillohsberg Heath Adventure Trail is a 2.2-kilometre circular route in the “Heathlands of the Central Lüß Plateau” nature reserve between Lutterloh and Unterlüß. A highlight along the route is the “Blue Eye of Schillohsberg” viewpoint, which offers a distinctive view of the landscape. At around six kilometres, the Lüsswald Tour is longer and runs entirely through the Lüsswald near Unterlüß, between Uelzen and Celle. Visitors can also start selected routes in the Südheide Nature Park’s cycling and hiking trail network from Unterlüß.

For a cycling trip, consider a route with a theme of its own: the 22-kilometre “White Gold of the Südheide” tour passes through the Südheide Nature Park, numerous heathlands and former diatomite mining areas. It brings together the landscape and traces of the region’s former diatomite mining in a single tour.

Diatomite, Art and Birdlife

The Albert König Museum in Unterlüß offers several ways to explore regional natural and cultural history. Its permanent exhibition on diatomite presents its natural history and value as a resource in an interactive way: visitors can listen to first-hand accounts, experiment with various specimens and use a microscope. The museum also preserves the artistic estate of the painter and graphic artist Albert König (1881–1944). Alongside his works, it displays works by other artists with significance for the region. In this way, the museum brings the history of a natural resource together with the art of regional artists.

Nearby, in the village of Lutterloh, the Treppenspeicher Lutterloh houses a visitor centre dedicated to the “Birdlife of the Südheide.” This traditionally built wooden structure has been carefully restored and is recognisable by its distinctive external staircase and thatched roof. Inside, visitors can select and play ten artistic video clips on a large monitor; each is five minutes long. Animated and narrated photos, along with bird calls recorded in their habitats, bring the region’s birdlife to life in the presentation.

Another historical destination is Haus Siedenholz, one of the oldest houses in the municipality of Unterlüß. It was first mentioned in 1697 as a single-storey forester’s house. The building also serves a special purpose for groups: it offers multi-day, experiential and hands-on educational programmes for school classes and children’s and youth groups. These programmes are designed for the groups mentioned and are distinct from an individual museum visit or hike.
