A walk of about 2.5 km around the Heath Lake offers opportunities to discover its flora and fauna; the 12.5 km Heideschleife trail connects landscapes with buildings in Müden. Visitors choosing the village for a stay can pick from different routes and cultural themes: from riverbanks and forest trails to historic buildings and their history.

Trails and Landscapes along the Örtze and Heath Lake

The Heideschleife Müden starts and ends at the historic watermill. Over 12.5 km, it connects the Heath Lake, the riverbank landscapes of the Örtze and Wietze, Wietzer Berg and the Heidschnuckenweg trail. Buildings and village views along the route also include St. Laurentius Church and the half-timbered houses in the village centre. The walk around the Heath Lake is considerably shorter, at about 2.5 km. At the lake, the focus is on flora and fauna: it has developed into an important habitat for many plants and animals, including dragonflies. Swimming is not permitted in the Heath Lake.

The River and Forest Adventure Trail offers a different perspective on the forest and river. It starts in Müden and follows forest tracks and scenic paths along the Örtze; interactive information boards accompany the route. Visitors more interested in the village’s history can use the Müden (Örtze) audio walk as they stroll through the village: it brings Müden’s 1,000-year history to life. The activities have different focuses, from landscapes and nature observation to local history.

Historic Buildings and Crafts

The watermill was built between 1435 and 1438 in the style of a Lower Saxon farmhouse and renovated between 1989 and 1997. Today, the historic building houses the tourist information centre, a library, a wedding room and exhibition spaces. There is also an herb garden and an orchard meadow at the mill. The mill’s role as both the starting and finishing point of the Heideschleife connects its present-day use with a route through the landscape and past other buildings in Müden.

Other historic sites reveal different aspects of the village’s past. The old Kösterschule was built in 1606. The outbuilding at the Rosien/Kohlmeyer farmstead on Schulstraße still contains almost all of the original equipment from the old wheelwright’s workshop. The 200-year-old stair granary was moved from Schmarbeck to the cemetery in Müden (Örtze); an exhibition there presents Müden’s cultural landscape and church history. Together with St. Laurentius Church and the half-timbered houses in the village centre, these buildings add specific historical points of interest to the scenic views along the Heideschleife.

More Activities and Practical Conditions

At Müden Wildlife Park, the “Falconer for a Day” experience package is available. It includes observing birds of prey at close range, flight training and taking part in a flight demonstration.

Canoeing on the Örtze is subject to precise time and location restrictions. Downstream canoeing is permitted only in a restricted area from the mill in Müden: annually from 16 May to 14 October, from 09:00 to 18:00, using canoes, Canadian canoes or kayaks. Check water levels and current restrictions before setting off. This helps you understand the conditions that apply to water activities and walking and hiking options.
