Residential history, half-timbered houses and historic green spaces give Celle several different ways to enjoy a stay. You can make the castle and theater the focus, explore the Old Town on foot, or choose the parks as a focus of their own. First decide whether you want to devote most of your time to castle history and the Old Town, or also plan other activities in the wider Celle destination.
Parks with different characters
The French Garden lies south of the historic Old Town and is a listed public park dating from the 17th century. Its east-west axis is formed by a linden avenue, with flower beds, lawns and groups of trees on either side. A pond with a fountain completes the grounds. The Celle Castle Park offers a different focus: it covers just under six and a half hectares, and the Welf Castle stands on a small island there. Large old trees and a moat surround it. Celle thus offers two distinct green urban landscapes: a park laid out around an avenue and a castle park with an island and water.
Residential history, theater and museums
Over the centuries, the Welf Castle developed from a simple fort into the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The four-winged complex features Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements inside and out. Its appeal for architecture enthusiasts lies in this blend of several periods. With its early Protestant furnishings, the castle chapel is considered an important example of Renaissance art in northern Germany; it can be visited only as part of a guided tour of the Welf Castle. Plan to visit it on a tour, rather than as a standalone chapel visit.
The Celle Palace Theatre is Europe’s oldest Baroque theater with regular performances and has its own acting company. If theater is part of your stay, it is worth checking the performance schedule for your travel dates. The Residence Museum in the castle offers a different focus: it covers the history of the residence, the life and work of the Welf dukes, Queen Caroline Mathilde of Denmark, and the history of the Kingdom of Hanover. The architecture, theater and museum thus offer different ways to explore Celle’s cultural history.
The synagogue in Celle is also a striking half-timbered building: it is considered the oldest largely preserved half-timbered synagogue in Lower Saxony. One of its two front buildings houses a museum with changing exhibitions on Jewish life in Celle and Jewish cultural history. At the Celle Art Museum, the nighttime exterior is one of its distinctive features: the building is closed at night, while light art inside and behind the glass facade makes it shine from the outside.
Exploring the Old Town on foot and activities in the Celle destination
The walk through Celle’s Old Town is a very easy 3.22-kilometer stroll. It begins at Celle Ducal Palace and ends at the synagogue in Celle. The route gives your city walk a clear framework between two places that also show different aspects of Celle’s history: the castle as a former residence and the synagogue as a largely preserved half-timbered synagogue. If you are looking for a manageable walk through the Old Town, this tour is a specific option.
The wider Celle destination offers more than city walks. The Südheide Nature Park has ten signposted themed cycling routes, with a total length of more than 400 kilometers. They lead to notable sights and through heathland, forests, heathland streams, and moor and pond landscapes. The area also has 23 themed hiking trails, five nature trails and three long-distance hiking trails. The options vary by activity and format, from themed cycling routes to different kinds of hiking trails.
Another seasonal activity in the wider Celle destination is canoeing on the heathland streams in the Celle district. It is permitted with restrictions each year from May 16 to October 14. Check local restrictions and water levels before setting out. This time period is especially important if you are planning your trip around a canoe tour.
