Greetsiel can be explored through several themes: its historic harbor and old buildings, as well as the Wadden Sea and the Krummhörn canal network. Its cultural history can be seen at specific sites; the National Park House complements this with seasonal nature topics. If you are looking for accommodation in Greetsiel, you can first decide whether history, nature or time on the water should be the focus of your stay.

Harbor, lanes and mills

Greetsiel’s historic harbor is over 600 years old. It is currently home to East Frisia’s largest fleet of shrimp boats, with 25 vessels; the boats regularly call at the picturesque harbor. Narrow lanes are lined with lovingly restored gabled houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The eastern of the two twin mills, a landmark of Greetsiel, was built in 1706. Together, the harbor, historic gabled houses and mill represent different aspects of the town’s history.

Church and stone house

Greetsiel’s Evangelical Reformed Church was built in two phases between 1380 and 1410 as a rectangular, single-nave church with a single interior, constructed of brick. The church houses Lower Saxony’s oldest church ship weather vane, dating from around 1700. Two historical periods therefore meet here: the medieval building and the weather vane, made some six centuries later.

Greetsiel’s stone house was originally built in the 14th century as a manor house for the Cirksena family of counts. Today, exhibitions are regularly held in its historic rooms; individual exhibitions may change. There are currently no fixed regular opening hours, and the house is accessible only during events or by special appointment. Before visiting, check whether a suitable date is available.

The Wadden Sea and a cycling break

The National Park House Greetsiel presents the exhibition “365 Days – Around Ley Bay.” Interactive displays explore seasonal changes in the Wadden Sea, nature experiences and places to visit nearby, as well as coastal life, including coastal protection and fishing. An aquarium features native fish and small marine creatures from the North Sea. The exhibition thus connects nature topics with questions about the use and protection of the coast.

A free bicycle parking facility is located right next to the National Park House, with around 100 spaces, a self-service repair station and luggage lockers with charging sockets for bicycle batteries. Bicycle parking, self-service repairs and luggage storage are all available in one place. As the facilities may change, check the details before your visit.

Getting around by water and bus

Visitors to Greetsiel can rent kayaks, canoes and pedal boats to explore the Krummhörn canal network. Greetsiel is also a good starting point for boat tours on this canal network. Renting a boat and taking a boat tour are therefore two different ways to get out on the water. Check rental availability and, for tours, the operators and schedules before making firm plans.

Buses to Greetsiel run regularly from a bus station. Check the timetable before travelling so you can include the connection and its current departure times in your plans.
