Several cycling routes pass through Hage, and the junction system helps you plan individual tours. You can put together your own route and shape the day around your preferred focus. Hage’s paddle-and-pedal station offers a special combination: From Hage, you can paddle to Norden-Leybucht or Neßmersiel, then cycle back through woods and meadows. This combines a water route with a return journey overland.
Cycling tours, waterways and spa park
The route of the museum railway is another point of reference in Hage: It runs from Norden via LĂĽtetsburg and Hage to Westerende and Dornum. Alongside the cycling routes, this route offers another way to include places and landscapes in your travel plans.
In the lakeside spa park, a circular path winds beneath the trees along the water, with benches offering places to rest along the way. The park also has a dog bathing area and an exercise course for active recreation. Different activities come together here: a walk, a break on a bench or exercise on the course. Hage’s spa centre offers a different focus, bringing water fitness, a sauna, massage, physiotherapy and wellness treatments together under one roof.
Building history and collections
St. Ansgari Church is one of the oldest church buildings in East Frisia. Its nave dates from around 1220; the west tower was added in 1250. These dates mark two periods of construction and give the church a long historical arc. The Hager Mill offers another point of reference in time: the five-storey gallery Dutch windmill was built in 1871 and is 30.30 metres high. The church and mill showcase different kinds of historic buildings.
The Hage Archive is housed in the Magda-Heyken House and contains historical files, documents and photographs. The house also displays historical objects from crafts, trade and agriculture, as well as paintings; a library and a local history collection complement the holdings. You can explore both written records and objects and collections relating to the town’s history there.
The Hage Art House presents works by various artists in changing exhibitions. The Forest & Wildlife Museum provides information about the East Frisian forest and its inhabitants. Together with the archive and local history collection, these offer different ways to engage with history, art and nature, without all serving the same purpose.
Landscape and the East Frisian setting
LĂĽtetsburg Castle Park is near Hage. The landscape garden covers about 30 hectares, is laid out in the early Romantic style and is one of the few surviving examples of its kind on mainland Europe. It is also considered the largest private English landscape garden in northern Germany. Its size and design give the park its own distinctive landscape and architectural character.
The East Frisian cultural setting includes Low German, a tea ceremony and BoĂźeln, a traditional ball game. These regional traditions add further topics to your travel plans alongside local buildings and collections. Hage can therefore be explored through more than individual attractions: options range from individually planned cycling tours and a walk by the lake to church architecture, a mill, local history and East Frisian culture.
