Ober-Mörlen Castle is a landmark that defines the town: the imposing main building and adjoining farmyard also serve as the town hall. Two distinct themes can shape your travel plans: the trails and views at the Winterstein, and the town’s architectural and church history. You can focus on nature and local history according to your interests.

Winterstein: Views and a Choice of Hiking Trails

In good weather, the 16.7-metre-high Winterstein Tower offers views in every direction, stretching as far as Frankfurt’s skyline. The amphibian nature trail also starts at the Winterstein: along its 4.4-kilometre route, seven stations provide information about frogs, newts and salamanders. At the ponds, you may be able to observe the animals in their natural habitat. The trail is particularly suitable for families with children, can be walked in street shoes and does not place significant demands on personal fitness.

A longer hike is described by the Natura Trail “Nature and Cultural Treasures in the Taunus – From Eichkopf to Haubergsgrund.” The circular route is 16.8 kilometres long, rated moderate and starts at the Winterstein car park near Ober-Mörlen. It is not marked throughout, so take this into account when planning. The two routes differ in more than just distance: the amphibian nature trail combines a short route with nature information and opportunities for observation, while the Natura Trail offers a longer hike of moderate difficulty.

Architecture and History in the Town

The Catholic parish church of St. Remigius is considered the oldest evidence of the Christian faith in the Mörler area; the parish was first mentioned in 1213. The lower part of the church tower and the main portal are the oldest parts of the church building. They were the only structural elements to survive the two major fires. Thus, the early mention of the parish and the surviving building elements represent distinct historical points of reference.

The Marienkapelle, also known as the “little chapel,” has marked the eastern edge of the village since 1844. It stands at a historic crossroads where routes to Cleeberg, Butzbach, Nieder-Weisel and Rockenberg once branched off. This striking natural-stone building has an octagonal floor plan and a pointed roof. The Gustav Adolf Church offers a different architectural style: this small chapel was built in 1926 in the style of a Baroque chapel, based on a design by architect and heritage conservationist Heinrich Walbe.

Cultural events are also held on the grounds and in the park of Ober-Mörlen Castle. If an event date is a deciding factor for your trip, check the specific dates in advance. The digital village tour of Ober-Mörlen takes you to interesting places, notable buildings and historically significant sites in the town, complementing the focus on individual buildings with further stops that explore local history.

Landscape and Getting Around

The Usa River shapes the landscape of Ober-Mörlen; the Usa Valley runs from west to east across the entire municipal area. The character of the town therefore encompasses both notable buildings and a landscape that extends across the municipality. During your stay, you can treat the views at the Winterstein, one of the hikes of your preferred length and the historic sites as separate points of interest, rather than combining them into a fixed itinerary.
