A stroll through town begins at the market square, among a historic fountain, surrounding little lanes and renovated half-timbered buildings. From here, you can discover Nidda through its architecture and history; Bad Salzhausen, a district of Nidda, offers a different focus with its spa park and terrain therapy trails. You can shape your stay around cultural experiences or walks in nature, without having to combine the two into a set itinerary.
Nidda’s Old Town and History
The Nidda Local History Museum provides an overview of the history of the town and its region. Frequent special exhibitions add to this overview, and the exhibition program changes. Alongside a walk through town, it offers a dedicated place to explore historical topics.
Narrow lanes wind through Nidda’s Old Town, past historic half-timbered houses and a castle. The lanes, market square and its renovated half-timbered buildings offer different views of the town’s historic character. The market square is a starting point for a stroll through town; the description of the Old Town also makes clear that narrow lanes and other buildings are part of the experience.
The Johanniter Tower is a prominent part of the town’s history. Construction began in 1491 as part of a large monastery complex belonging to the Order of St John. It is the last surviving remnant of the oldest Johanniter foundation in Hesse and the eighth-oldest in Germany. Its construction date and surviving role as a remnant make it a tangible link to the history of the Order of St John in Nidda.
The Lange Steg also connects architectural history with orientation: built in 1607, the stone bridge crosses the Nidda River into the historic center of the town of the same name. If you are interested in different types of architecture, the tower, a remnant of a monastery complex, and the bridge, a crossing over the river, can be seen side by side. Each tells a different story about Nidda’s historic character.
Spa Park and Terrain Therapy Trails in Bad Salzhausen
Bad Salzhausen offers three certified terrain therapy trails: the Spa Park Loop, the Landgrave Loop and the Am Naturlehrpfad trail. Length and route details are provided for two of them, so you can compare those routes directly.
The Spa Park Loop is 2.8 kilometers long and follows paved and compacted gravel paths. It has a somewhat steeper incline in the Upper Spa Park. The 2.7-kilometer Am Naturlehrpfad terrain therapy trail passes a nature trail with information boards and a wetland habitat. At 2.7 and 2.8 kilometers, the two routes are similar in length; their main differences are the route features described above.
The 52-hectare spa park is distinguished by a rare collection of plants and trees. It adds a distinct park landscape to the walking options. Numerous benches in the graduation tower invite you to rest and inhale the air. The graduation tower closes for a seasonal winter break, so take the season into account when planning a visit.
The Wetterau as a Wider Travel Destination
Beyond Nidda, the wider Wetterau travel destination offers further nature and cultural experiences. The nature reserves in the Wetterau district are open to visitors, with information boards, observation points, and hiking and cycling trails. The Bingenheimer Ried is one of the key areas of the “Auenverbund Wetterau” landscape conservation area and an example of the Wetterau’s distinctive landscapes.
Cycling enthusiasts can also explore a regional and long-distance trail network in the Wetterau, with many routes connected to one another. Numerous train stations and stops make it possible to travel by public transport to cycling routes in the Wetterau district. Check current connections when planning your trip. For a cultural perspective on the region, the Wetterau Museum presents local and regional history from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages, as well as the history of the Celts and Romans. It is also a regional Limes information center for the central Wetterau. These regional attractions complement Nidda’s town history but are part of the wider Wetterau travel destination.
