The Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R 5 is 220 kilometres long and runs right through Hoheneiche. In Reichensachsen, historic farmsteads and contrasting streetscapes showcase another aspect of Wehretal. This gives trip planning two clear points of interest: routes near Hoheneiche and Reichensachsen’s architectural heritage.

Cycling Routes and Hiking Trail near Hoheneiche

The Herkules-Wartburg Cycle Route also passes through Hoheneiche. The Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R 5 and the Herkules-Wartburg Cycle Route meet the Meißner Circular Cycle Route at the northern exit of Hoheneiche. This clearly identifies the point where the two cycle routes connect, which you can take into account when planning your own route.

The “Durch die Langen Hessen” high-altitude hiking trail offers a different perspective. It passes directly by Hoheneiche and follows the medieval trade route from Frankfurt to Leipzig. The routes therefore have different focuses: the R 5 and the Herkules-Wartburg Cycle Route are cycle routes through the village, while the high-altitude hiking trail follows the historic trade route.

Historic Streetscapes in Reichensachsen

Along the main road, distinctive 18th-century farmsteads shape the streetscape. The Steinweg, which runs almost parallel, is more densely built up and older in the village centre. There, the streetscape is defined by small-scale farmsteads with houses whose gables face the street. “Gable-fronted” describes the orientation of a house in which its gable faces the street.

At the northern end of Steingasse, there is also a well-preserved group of houses dating from the 17th century. Together with the contrast between the main road and Steinweg, it offers a comparison of different building periods and street layouts within Reichensachsen. The group of houses is another striking landmark for anyone interested in historic townscapes.

Mittelmühle in Reichensachsen

The Mittelmühle is another local point of interest: it is still operating, and flour for home use can still be bought there. If you are planning a special detour to visit, check current availability beforehand. The mill is particularly interesting for travellers who would like to include a regional product in their plans as well as exploring the townscapes.

The Wider Destination of Werra-Meißner District

As part of the wider destination of Werra-Meißner District, the district belongs to Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land as a tourist destination. Hoher Meißner is the region’s highest mountain and is regarded as the home of Frau Holle. The region between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufunger Wald is characterised by geological diversity, varied landscapes, and rich flora and fauna. This regional context complements, but does not replace, the specific local attractions in Wehretal.

The changing seasons also offer a range of nature experiences in Geo-Naturpark: these include cherry blossom in the Kirschenland Witzenhausen, orchid blooms, pink poppy fields in Germerode and Grandenborn, Frau Holle’s flower meadows, as well as autumn foliage and winter sports on Hoher Meißner. The timing of seasonal events varies from year to year. If you would like to plan your stay around a particular bloom or season, take the current seasonal schedule into account.

Werra-Meißner District is also home to the Kirschenerlebnispfad in and around Witzenhausen. This family-friendly themed trail has 17 stops where visitors can learn about cherries and their many varieties, try things out and experience the cultural landscape around Witzenhausen. This attraction focuses specifically on cherries and the cultural landscape within the wider destination.
