More than 1,000 half-timbered houses define Eschwege’s old town, while the Werra flows right through the town. Together with Lake Werratalsee, scenic viewpoints and nearby destinations, they offer several distinct focal points for your stay. To plan your visit, choose between the old town and museum, water activities or views of the surrounding landscape.
Half-Timbered Houses, Museum and Scenic Views
Many of the half-timbered houses in Eschwege’s old town are richly decorated with striking flat carvings. The Eschwege Town Museum is located in the heart of the old town. Housed in a former tobacco warehouse with a historic atmosphere, it displays archaeological and natural history collections. You can also see intricately designed traditional costumes from the Werra Valley. This brings together several themes under one roof, complementing views of the half-timbered town: archaeology, natural history and regional clothing.
At 47.62 metres, Nikolai Tower is the tallest tower in Eschwege. From its viewing balcony, you can look out over Eschwege towards the Leuchtberge hills and Blaue Kuppe; the Bismarck Tower on Großer Leuchtberg offers a 360-degree view of the Werra Valley. The old town–Bismarck Tower circular trail starts in Eschwege’s old town. Check the latest access information before visiting the viewpoints.
The Werra, Lake Werratalsee and the Landscape
Lake Werratalsee is about a ten-minute walk from Eschwege town centre and covers approximately 110 hectares. Numerous water sports are available on the Werra and Lake Werratalsee in and around Eschwege: canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, rowing, windsurfing, sailing and fishing. The Werra runs through the town, while the lake provides a separate destination for water activities, about a ten-minute walk from the town centre.
Near Eschwege is Blaue Kuppe, a natural monument and basalt vent that intruded into the sandstone rocks of the Mesozoic Era. The Eschwege Leuchtberge are two distinctive cone-shaped hills of Bunter sandstone, rising to 289 and 319 metres. Together with the viewpoints, these landscape destinations offer further perspectives on the area around the town.
Eschwege High Ropes Course offers six courses with varying levels of difficulty. It is located at Leuchtbergstraße 40, 37269 Eschwege. The different difficulty levels provide practical guidance if you are considering adding the high ropes course to your plans.
The Broader Setting: Werra-Meißner District
For tourism, the Werra-Meißner district is part of the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park. The region between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufungen Forest features great geological diversity, varied landscapes, and diverse flora and fauna. More than 35 percent of the Werra-Meißner district is designated as nature conservation areas.
Hoher Meißner is the highest mountain in the region and is regarded as the home of Frau Holle. The Werra-Meißner district has an extensive network of certified premium trails as well as the Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen trail. The trails take hikers through some of the Geo-Nature Park’s most scenic areas. These regional highlights complement a visit to Eschwege without conflating the district’s nature and hiking offerings with the town’s attractions.
