Roses, moorlands and historic boundary stones shape the trails in Rosenthal. Routes range from a shorter circular walk to long hikes; nature and cultural attractions also offer different themes to consider when choosing an outing.

Hiking Trails by Length and Theme

The Franzosenwiesen Tour is a 19.2-kilometer premium hiking trail in the uplands near Rosenthal; its hiking seal is valid until May 2028. It leads through forest meadows and moorlands and past streams. The “Franzosenwiesen” is a nature reserve with numerous endangered plant and animal species. The tour starts at the Seegerteichhütte near Rosenthal. There is a parking lot at the hut; the Rodaer Straße bus stop in Rosenthal is listed as 500 meters away.

For a shorter loop, try the Wild Rose Trail: It is 2.6 kilometers long, mostly paved, and suitable for a stroll in any season for visitors of all ages. Around 60 different varieties of roses can be seen along the trail, including about 40 wild rose varieties and their hybrids. The Wild Rose Trail is also home to the “Rosenmärchen” nature discovery site, with various play and rest facilities. This gives you a choice between a longer hike, a short paved loop and a trail centered on roses.

Natural Areas and Boundary Stones

The “Merzhäuser Teiche” nature reserve is located near Rosenthal. It covers about 20 hectares; 128 bird species have been observed there to date, including 57 breeding species.

The Southeast Boundary Stone Trail begins at the “Dreiländerstein” in the southeastern corner of Rosenthal’s municipal forest and runs along the municipal and district boundary to the Krimmelbachgrund in the “Merzhäuser Teiche” nature reserve. Over six kilometers, it passes additional historic boundary stones and explains their historical background. A continuous boundary stone hike of just over 17 kilometers is possible from the “Böddeberg” above Willersdorf to the area around the “Alten Wetterweg” in Rosenthal’s municipal area.

The historic boundary stone trail in the northeast and south of Rosenthal is 14 kilometers long. Of this, 7.5 kilometers make up the historic section, which follows a prehistoric ridge path and the Rhine–Weser watershed. The boundary stone routes described here therefore differ both in length and in their points of interest.

There are hiking trails around Rosenthal. The Burgwald has a total of 103 kilometers of well-marked hiking trails.

Culture in Rosenthal

The Protestant Church in Rosenthal is near the market square. For historical, artistic and urban planning reasons, it is listed as a cultural monument in the State of Hesse’s register of monuments.

Since 2010, a small school museum has been housed in the left-hand classroom of the Old School in Rosenthal, bringing the history of the former school back to life. Please contact the museum in advance if you would like to visit.
