Hillershausen combines signposted hiking trails with scenic views and ecclesiastical history. When planning your stay, you can choose between nature trails and cultural stops to focus on different interests.

Hiking, Views and Nature

Around Hillershausen, green meadows and forests with well-marked hiking trails invite you to hike, go horseback riding and relax in a natural landscape with a low mountain range climate. A nature tour is suitable for all ages, families, groups and nature lovers; the meeting point is the car park at the Hillershausen multi-purpose hall.

A hiking trail from Hillershausen reaches Nieder-Schleidern and the Sauerland-Höhenflug after about 1 km. The Sauerland-Höhenflug is a 250 km long-distance hiking trail from Korbach in the east to Meinerzhagen in the west. After about 300 m on hiking trail NS3, you can enjoy an impressive view across the Waldecker Land and towards the Land of a Thousand Mountains.

The Aarmühle Circular Trail 2, “By the Rushing Waters of the Aar,” passes Aarmühle and follows the Aar to the Aarschröder farmstead. A small path leads uphill to a forest track on the Kleiner Korskopf; the route ends at the edge of the forest with panoramic views. When choosing a route, you can compare the views from NS3 with the Aarmühle Circular Trail, which follows the Aar and climbs to the forest track.

Church and Star Trail

The Catholic Church of St Michael was built as a replacement church on the outskirts of Hillershausen between 1935 and 1937. Another local route is the “In God’s Footsteps” Star Trail, which leads to three other wayside crosses. A historic church and a named trail with wayside crosses complement the opportunities for hiking and observing nature.

In the wider Korbach destination

The wider Korbach destination offers everything from urban history to geology and mining. The Wolfgang-Bonhage-MUSEUM KORBACH covers the world-famous fossils of the Korbach Fissure, the 1,000-year history of the medieval Hanseatic town, and evidence of historic gold mining on the Eisenberg.

The GeoPfad Korbach is a circular trail of about 20 km that connects the Korbach Fissure with the Eisenberg near Goldhausen. Germany’s largest gold deposit, a visitor mine and the “Goldspur” educational trail are located there. The trail features evidence of mining above ground, while further traces can be seen underground in the visitor mine.

To explore the town’s history, the 2.1 km “Between the Walls” circular trail runs between Korbach’s two medieval town walls, around the historic old town. At 10 stops, visitors can learn interesting and curious facts about the town’s history and discover modern aspects of Korbach. The walk begins and ends by the town model at the Wolfgang-Bonhage-MUSEUM KORBACH.

The Green Trails Korbach offer another way to get active: at the Eisenberg near Korbach-Goldhausen, they include 10 km of singletrack trails. The routes have been complete since summer 2023 and are linked into four loops of varying difficulty, offering riding fun for the whole family.

Nearby leisure options around Hillershausen also include the amusement park in neighbouring Medebach, Lake Edersee with its castle and massive dam, and the winter sports resorts of Winterberg and Willingen.
