Willersdorf is in the Ederbergland holiday region. Two distinct reasons to visit shape the options here: the Protestant church, a cultural monument, and the hike to Knebelsrod. The stream known as Kaltes Wasser, a tributary of the Nemphe, flows through the village. This lets you choose what to focus on based on your interests: would you like to explore a historic building or enjoy a hike with views of the observation platform on Knebelsrod?

Church and Local History

The Protestant Church in Willersdorf is listed as a cultural monument in the monument register of the State of Hesse. It is considered the landmark of this village of 600 residents. The church, which collapsed in 1975, left behind a red sandstone portal with a round-arched top and moulded frame, dated “Anno 1724.” A round arch has a rounded upper end; moulding refers to the carved contours of the stone frame. The interior contains the pulpit and organ from earlier buildings; the organ was built in 1879. The portal and organ are therefore surviving features from different periods.

Willersdorf was probably established as early as the beginning of the 9th century as a small clearing settlement in a forested, hilly landscape on the northeastern edge of the Burgwald. The village was first mentioned in a document on 24 July 1294 under the name Wilhartisdorf. Willersdorf was resettled in the 16th century and has been continuously inhabited ever since. The presumed early settlement therefore predates the first documented mention; the two dates refer to different periods, not the same point in time.

Hiking and Getting There

On the hike to Knebelsrod, views open up from Willersdorf towards the Knebelsrod observation platform. Two themes offer different focuses: at the church, the historic architectural features and furnishings; on the hike, the views of the platform. County Road 99 between Oberholzhausen and Bottendorf runs through Willersdorf. Public transport is provided by an on-call shared taxi. Check the service details for the on-call shared taxi before travelling.

The landmark of the town of Frankenberg is its unique half-timbered town hall with ten towers, dating from 1509. On its south, north and west sides, its Knaggen—corbels—support the central oriels; they are considered masterpieces of medieval woodcarving. The 13th-century Hexenturm is the only surviving one of the 20 defensive towers that originally formed part of Frankenberg’s town fortifications. Its summit platform can be reached by climbing around 50 steps. If you plan to climb it, check current visitor access beforehand. The Marien Chapel of the Church of Our Lady is Late Gothic and can only be accessed from the outside. The former Cistercian convent of St. Georgenberg now houses the Museum in the Monastery in Frankenberg. At Frankenberg Wildlife Park, visitors can see wild boar, deer, sheep and goats at close range; admission is free.
