Interactive stations, juniper bushes and historic paths give Altenlotheim several distinct points of interest. The village combines insights into nutrient-poor grasslands and heathland with a local history visible along old paths and in half-timbered buildings. You can focus on habitats, the former functions of the paths or the annual festival. Practical details can also help with planning: the Heath Blossom Festival takes place in August, and the Heathland Circular Trail is about seven kilometres long.

Explore the Heathland and Plan Your Walks

The heathland nature trail brings different types of nutrient-poor grassland and heathland, as well as their flora and fauna, to life at interactive stations. The trail is marked with a sheep symbol. Here, the focus is on the habitats and how they are presented—a different way to explore the area from the historic routes around Altenlotheim.

The approximately seven-kilometre Heathland Circular Trail starts at the Koppe entrance to the national park near Frankenau-Altenlotheim. Its approximate length gives you a guide for planning; no walking time is specified. Check the route details before setting out.

Koppe is a semi-open landscape dotted with juniper bushes. In the summer months, heath pink blooms there among cushions of heather. At Fahrentriesch, the landscape also tells of its former use: after being cleared in the late Middle Ages, the open land was used as woodland pasture. The blooms and the history of land use offer different points of interest as you explore the landscape.

Historic Paths and Quernst Church

The Seligenpfad follows the former route along which the dead from Altenlotheim were taken to be buried at Quernst. An old, direct connecting path from Altenlotheim to Frebershausen also passes close to the ruins of Quernst Church. Both routes highlight the historic connection between the village and Quernst, but had different purposes: one was used to reach the burial site, while the other directly connected Altenlotheim with Frebershausen.

Quernst Church was the former parish church of the abandoned settlement of Quernhorst. Its cemetery also served the surrounding villages. The cemetery’s historic role therefore extended beyond Quernhorst, while the church’s former parish function was tied to that settlement. This distinction helps put the different local connections of Quernst Church into context.

Half-Timbered Houses and the Village Scene

Altenlotheim’s village centre is characterised by densely built farmsteads with varied layouts, featuring half-timbered houses and barns dating from the late 19th century. On Korbacher Straße stands a two-storey, single-roofed half-timbered house, built around 1800 with its ridge parallel to the street. These dates provide different historical reference points: the farmsteads and barns date from the late 19th century, while the single-roofed house dates from around 1800. Visitors interested in architecture will find more than one period represented in the local half-timbered buildings.

The Heath Blossom Festival in August

Altenlotheim hosts its annual Heath Blossom Festival in August. The programme includes family activities, storytelling, contributions from the herbalist and the Juniper Man, and the crowning of a new Heath Blossom Princess. The festival combines family activities with stories and named characters. If you are planning your trip specifically around the event, check the dates for your travel period.
