Wartenberg Castle Ruins lie in the geologically significant Lauterbach Graben between Angersbach and Bad Salzschlirf, on a mountain spur of the Birkich that projects 300 m into the valley. Marked trails explore both the geology and local history. The “Wartenberg Time Trail” is the longer themed route and includes the “Historical Walk” as a section; the “Wartenberg Panorama Trail” and “Wartenberg Hiking Trails 1–5” are circular routes around Wartenberg.
Hiking through geology and local history
The “Wartenberg Time Trail” is a marked hiking trail of about 18 km through the village and the Angersbach district. Its themes range from geology and the geological history of Hesse, as well as the Vogelsberg volcanic region, to local history and the region’s prehistoric and early history.
A section of about 5 km is marked as the “Historical Walk” and leads through the village to the castle ruins. The shorter “Historical Walk” focuses on Angersbach’s local history; the longer “Wartenberg Time Trail” also covers geological history and geology. The “Historical Walk through Angersbach” tells the story of the village since 812 through numerous information panels; photographs show how it has changed over the past century.
Circular routes and trail surfaces
The “Wartenberg Panorama Trail” is a circular route around both districts of Wartenberg and is intended for hikers, horse riders, mountain bikers and Nordic walkers. The “Wartenberg Hiking Trails 1–5” are also circular routes around Wartenberg and intended for these groups. All five cross the Panorama Trail and can be combined with it. You can choose between a single circular route and a combination with the Panorama Trail.
Some sections of the Panorama Trail are paved and are also suitable for wheelchair users, inline skaters, strollers and touring bikes. The steep staircase at Sonnberg in Angersbach can be avoided; the alternative route is signposted.
Cultural trails and outdoor pool
The “Sunshine Trail of Poetry” was created in 2014 by the Landenhausen Cultural Association (Kulturverein Landenhausen e. V.) and has since been filled each year with new poems and texts by well-known and regional artists. Alongside the historical information panels, it offers a literary perspective on the village: poems and texts shape the theme of this trail.
In the Landenhausen district, the heated outdoor pool has a swimming pool with diving blocks, a non-swimmer pool and a children’s paddling pool. As seasonal opening arrangements may change, please check the current opening hours before planning a visit.
