The bakehouse and MTB Route 7 offer two different perspectives on Rebgeshain: the history of village life and a circular route through the Vogelsberg landscape.

Bakehouse and Cemetery Complex

The bakehouse at Brunnenweg 2 dates in its essential structure to 1830. Its construction combines solid basalt and brick masonry with shingled half-timbering. The bakehouse fittings have been preserved, along with an adjoining room where cakes could be sampled. The bakehouse is listed as a Hessian cultural monument and is protected because of its original significance to village life.

The cemetery complex includes a 19th-century basalt enclosure, with a portal flanked by lime trees. A memorial erected after the First World War commemorates soldiers or fallen servicemen from Rebgeshain. The cemetery hall was built in 1972 to a design by Walter Ruppel and features noteworthy contemporary architecture. The complex thus brings together older structures and a building from the second half of the 20th century.

Village History Through the Ages

Rebgeshain was founded between the 8th and 12th centuries. The schoolhouse dates from 1813; in 1910, Rebgeshain had a one-room elementary school. These milestones therefore span the village’s early history through to its 20th-century school history. The village name also has a regional historical connection: it originated in Hagen settlements.

MTB Route and Landscape

The 33.2-kilometre, moderately difficult MTB Route 7 Ulrichstein is a circular route through the Vulkanregion Vogelsberg Nature Park. It passes through the Breungeshainer Heide nature reserve, by the Landgrafenborn spring, through mixed forest and along a paved farm track to Rebgeshain, then continues along the edge of the village towards Ulrichstein. The route as described therefore includes a protected area, stretches of woodland and the farm track.

The Rebgeshain district lies within the Hoher Vogelsberg FFH area.

In the wider destination of Ulrichstein

The wider destination of Ulrichstein offers more to explore. From the Schloßberg in Ulrichstein, enjoy panoramic views across the Hessian uplands. The Vogelsberggarten showcases the Vogelsberg’s plant life and botanical rarities in a variety of beds. An approximately 800-metre-long paved circular path is easy to navigate with a pushchair.

The Museum im Vorwerk in Ulrichstein hosts changing exhibitions on hunting, art, customs, local heritage, rural culture, agriculture and life in the rural areas of the Hoher Vogelsberg. Ulrichstein’s historic buildings also include the customs house, built from basalt in 1464.

The routes also offer concrete points of comparison. The moderately difficult, 33-kilometre Ulrichstein Panorama Loop starts at Lindenplatz and runs via Rudingshain to the Hoherodskopf. At nearly the same length as the 33.2-kilometre MTB Route 7 Ulrichstein, it is also rated moderately difficult, although the two routes follow different paths. From Ulrichstein, the Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R7 runs eastwards for approximately 1.5 kilometres, parallel to the Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R4. Check current route conditions before setting out.
