The municipality of Mücke is located in Hesse’s Vogelsberg district, on the western slope of the Vogelsberg. Gently rolling green hills define the landscape; two streams meet in the Luse nature reserve. Local history and exhibitions are a cultural highlight, alongside hiking and cycling routes. If you are considering Mücke as a destination for a short break, it helps to first decide whether cultural sites or outdoor activities should shape your days.

Local history and exhibitions

The cellar of Merlau Castle houses a 1:100 scale model of the former castle. Merlau Castle was built between 1583 and 1592 as a complex of several buildings. The castle cellar also offers insights into more than 400 years of local history.

The Kunstturm Mücke houses a permanent exhibition in its annex about iron ore mining in the Vogelsberg. The Kunstturm also serves as a starting point or stop on a cycling and hiking route exploring the Vogelsberg’s mining history.

The Hobstallstowwe village museum in Merlau displays historic agricultural and household equipment, as well as changing exhibitions. In Groß-Eichen, the Ernst Eimer Stube is a public exhibition space featuring works by the painter and poet Ernst Eimer. Koallese Haus was built in 1545 and is considered one of the oldest dated half-timbered houses in Upper Hesse. Wall paintings in the Protestant church in Ober-Ohmen depict Saint Elisabeth.

Hiking and cycling

The ERZWEG Mitte runs exclusively through districts of the municipality of Mücke. Two trailheads with parking are located at Mücke station and at the “Mittelpunkt” near Flensunger Hof. This identifies both the route within the municipality and two specific starting points.

The Seenbach Tour is an easy cycling route of about 13 kilometres from Mücke to Laubach. Several well-signposted cycling routes can also be used to explore or travel through Mücke. By contrast, the ERZWEG Mitte is limited to districts of Mücke, while the Seenbach Tour is a cycling route to Laubach.

Further afield in the Vogelsberg

The Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic region. The Vogelsberg mountain meadows are the largest protected areas of their kind in Hesse. In Schotten, the interactive Vulkaneum explains volcanism in an engaging way; its multimedia exhibition explores volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg. At various experiment stations and interactive exhibits, visitors can experience the past firsthand. The Vogelsberg treetop walk is 500 metres long in total and features suspension bridges; at the Hoherodskopf climbing forest, visitors can climb from tree to tree under the guidance of trained staff.
