The market square has been the heart of Lauterbach since 1266. It is surrounded by numerous half-timbered houses worth seeing, and the Old Town’s attractions are easy to reach on foot. This gives a visit to the town a clear historical focus. At the same time, Lauterbach offers plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling—two distinct sides to consider when planning your stay.

The Old Town and its architectural history

The Anchor Tower is a striking reminder of the town’s fortifications. It is the last surviving defensive tower of Lauterbach’s town wall and has watched over the gateway into the town for more than 750 years. The Protestant town church offers a different perspective: built between 1763 and 1768, it is one of the most beautiful Rococo churches in Hesse and a jewel of the High Baroque.

The Hohhaus Museum also offers a window onto history. A guided tour provides insights into the history of the house and includes, among other things, archaeological finds from Wartenberg Castle and finds from burial mounds. In the Historic Classroom, visitors can experience a school lesson as it was 100 years ago. As the museum is being renovated, check in advance whether the tour and classroom experience are currently available.

Another historical offering, the “Lauterbacher Unterwelt” (“Lauterbach Underworld”) tour, takes visitors into historic vaulted cellars. They lie beneath the former service wings of the first castle brewery, the town hall and the Johannesberg Post Hotel. The tour brings everyday, cultural, social and economic history to life, complementing the view of the town’s visible buildings with an underground perspective.

Cycling, hiking and special visitor information

The Volcano Cycle Path follows a former railway line and runs for a total of 94 kilometres from Altenstadt via Lauterbach to Schlitz. Along the way, the route passes through woodland and meadow landscapes. When planning your trip, it is useful to distinguish between the full route and its connection to the town: Lauterbach lies along the route, while the 94 kilometres refer to the entire cycle path.

Near Lauterbach, the Bachtour Lauterbach trail passes through the MĂĽnchswiesen, a protected area with rare flora and fauna. Eisenbach Castle is also nearby. It can only be viewed from the outside; the castle chapel is open to visitors. You can get the key at the Burg-Post restaurant. These access details are especially important if you plan to visit the chapel.

The Vogelsberg as a wider travel destination

Beyond Lauterbach, the Vogelsberg offers a broader setting for exploring nature and culture. The Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic region. In Schotten, the interactive Vulkaneum brings volcanism to life. A multimedia exhibition explores volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg; visitors can experience the past first-hand at various experiment stations and interactive exhibits.

The hiking trails also vary in scale. The GipfelTour Schotten is 14 kilometres long and crosses four peaks in the Oberwald, as well as species-rich mountain meadows and varied woodland with natural basalt formations. The Weitblicktour Ulrichstein is a moderately difficult 11.6-kilometre circular route around Ulrichstein, through deciduous forests and a varied patchwork of landscapes. For a longer route, the 119-kilometre Vulkanring Vogelsberg circles the ridge of the Hoher Vogelsberg, connecting natural and cultural highlights.

The Vogelsberggarten on Ulrichstein’s castle hill offers another regional perspective. Since 2001, age-old cultural heritage around the castle ruins has been maintained and cultivated using traditional farming methods. Visitors can discover 243 species of wild-growing plants in the garden. When planning your trip, you can focus on Lauterbach’s Old Town and history or include further themes of nature and culture across the wider Vogelsberg destination.
