Weißenborn combines a protected limestone area on the edge of the village with guided hikes, a cycling route and local history. The Brothers Grimm ancestral home and the church add specific historical points of interest to the nature and outdoor activities. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between guided activities, a geocaching trail and the railway cycling path.

Nature on the Edge of the Village

The “Kalkberg bei Weißenborn” FFH area is located within the municipality of Ottrau, directly on the northern edge of Weißenborn. It covers 18.51 hectares and is a south-facing limestone slope with juniper and orchids. Its location, size and landscape features give the protected area a distinct character. Kalkberg thus provides a distinctive natural feature alongside the village’s hiking and cultural attractions.

Hiking, Cycling and Local History

Guided hikes are offered on the Cultural History Trail in Weißenborn. Depending on the booking package, amateur performers portraying characters from fairy tales appear at eight stations, including a Goose Girl with real geese. If these stations are important to you, check in advance what is included in the package you book.

The Cultural History Trail’s multi-geocaching route is 4.6 kilometres long and takes about two hours. It starts at the Brothers Grimm ancestral home, Lindenstraße 5. Check in advance whether the route is available at your preferred time; its approximate duration and length will help you plan accordingly.

The Rotkäppchenland railway cycling path follows the route of the former Knüllwaldbahn railway and passes through Weißenborn. With a maximum gradient of 2.8 percent, it is easy to ride and also suitable for family outings. Alongside the guided hiking activities, this offers a cycling route with a clearly specified gradient. The Brothers Grimm ancestral home is also in Weißenborn.

A bronze plaque at the ancestral home commemorates the former appearance of the half-timbered house. The church in Weißenborn offers another glimpse into the village’s history: its oldest parts are Romanesque, and it was remodelled in the Baroque period. These are two distinct historical traces—the memory of the former appearance of a half-timbered house and the church’s architectural history.

Ottrau as a Wider Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Ottrau offers further nature and history attractions, including the Immichenhainer ponds, an area of around 23.2 hectares that has been protected since 1985. Since 2008, the ponds have also been designated as an FFH area with the same name and boundaries.

The “Historische Grenzen” (Historic Boundaries) route in Ottrau is just under ten kilometres long. It highlights historic boundary stones, some of which date back to at least the 16th century, passes four springs in the Immichenhain district and skirts the Immichenhainer ponds nature reserve. The reserve originally comprised seven small lakes. From the “Immichenhain-Blick” bench, you can look out over the village of Immichenhain, its former monastery chapel and the buildings of the present-day state-owned estate; the Bodenbach valley opens up here towards Schrecksbach. Ottrau lies in a scenic low mountain landscape.

The history of Immichenhain can also be placed in context: the former monastery church was built in the Gothic style at the beginning of the 13th century. Its surviving wall paintings date from the first half of the 14th century. Large 17th-century epitaphs reveal part of the family history of the Lords of Diede. Together, the architectural style, paintings and funerary monuments represent several distinct historical layers within the wider travel destination of Ottrau.
