Haydau Monastery, a historic garden and a cable ferry across the Fulda represent different sides of Morschen. When planning your trip, you can treat cultural history, local townscapes and paths along the Fulda as separate focal points, then tailor your stay to what interests you most.

Haydau Monastery: From Monastery to Palace

The history of Haydau Monastery began with its founding in 1235. In the 14th century, the complex developed into an economic centre in the Fulda Valley; during the Landgraves’ era, it was converted into a palace. This sequence traces the transformation from monastery to palace without conflating the different periods into a single story.

You can book guided tours of Haydau Monastery. A tour on your mobile phone takes you through 800 years of the history of the monastery, palace and garden. Today, the monastery is also a venue for conferences, cultural events and celebrations. Its historic past and present-day use exist side by side: the tour focuses on its history, while events help shape the complex’s character today.

Baroque Garden and Grounds

From 1685, Landgrave Charles had a Baroque garden laid out around the former monastery and later Landgrave palace. Its design features terraces, parterres and a high perimeter wall. An elaborate staircase with artificial grotto architecture has been preserved in the palace park; it is considered a special attraction of the Haydau garden. Architectural details thus complement the broader garden design, so a visit need not focus solely on the grounds as a whole.

The historic garden was restored in 2005 and is maintained through the voluntary efforts of the local community. Alongside its Baroque design, this gives the garden a connection to its care today.

Local History in Neumorschen and Wichte

In Neumorschen, a distinctive feature of the historic market street is a water channel that is partly open and blends into the well-preserved streetscape of half-timbered houses. The Jacobi Church, renovated in 2008, and its surroundings, landscaped by the village community, are also worth a visit. If you would like to visit the interior, arrange access in advance with the parish office, where you can collect the church key.

The Wichte local history museum also has a weaving room. Check its opening hours before planning a visit. The Jewish cemetery in Binsförth is considered the oldest Jewish burial ground in North Hesse. Each of these places has its own appeal, from half-timbered houses and the water channel to the church and local history.

Two Routes, Different Trip Plans

The Haydau Pilgrimage Route starts at the monastery church, passes through the Fulda Valley to Kapellenberg and continues to Altmorschen. Altmorschen is known for its expansive views and the charm of its half-timbered village. Much of the route is flat and well surfaced, making it easy to manage in any weather and suitable for all ages.

Another option is the Fulda Cycle Route R1: between Morschen-Binsförth and Malsfeld-Beiseförth, there is a cable ferry about 50 metres long for cyclists and pedestrians. It can be used to cross the Fulda, which is about 40 metres wide. The pilgrimage route passes over Kapellenberg and through Altmorschen, while the cable ferry is part of a section of the cycle route. The options therefore differ both in their route and in whether you travel on foot or use the cycle route.

Plan Your Journey and Stay

Morschen is on federal highway B83, between Kassel and Bebra. The Malsfeld junction of the A7 towards Kassel–Würzburg is about 11 kilometres from Morschen.

The Klostercafé in the south wing of Haydau Monastery serves cakes and sheet cakes during opening hours. Check the opening hours before planning a visit to the café. When looking for accommodation, you can first decide what you want to focus on: monastery and garden culture, local history or paths along the Fulda. This lets you choose a hotel to suit your travel plans without turning the different places and activities into a fixed itinerary.
