Welferode’s historic village centre, the Hochlandrock Festival and the trails to Mosenberg offer different perspectives on the area: rural village structure, event history and landscape. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between the village’s enduring character, a festival date and a hike with a summit as its destination.

Village Centre and History

Welferode’s historic village centre lies south of Preßnitzer Straße (L 3254). Several larger farmsteads cluster around the church along Knüllstraße; the village centre has retained its character as a farming village to this day. Welferode was first mentioned in a document in 1196. This date provides a historical reference point, while the arrangement of the farmsteads and church describes the local structure. Visitors interested in rural village settings will find two complementary perspectives here: the early written mention and the village centre’s enduring character.

Festival, Bakehouse and Village Café

The Hochlandrock Festival was launched in 2001 as an open-air festival in Welferode, a district of Homberg. The annual festival takes place on a meadow with panoramic views of the North Hessian landscape; the specific venue may vary from one edition to another. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the details for the relevant edition. This helps distinguish the enduring character of the village centre from an event date tied to a particular edition.

The event programme also includes a bakehouse group that prepares its baked goods for baking in the old bakehouse. This is a different local connection from the open-air format: it is about preparing to bake in the old bakehouse. The village café is also intended as an open meeting place for people of any age or background. An announcement dated 8 May 2026 gives a regular schedule of every 14 days. Before your visit, check the current calendar and whether the café is open.

Hikes to Mosenberg

One route to Mosenberg passes through a nature reserve before reaching the summit. The route to Mosenberg near Homberg (Efze) follows field paths towards Welferode and through the small Hopfenberg wood. These specific landscape connections complement the historic village setting and the event themes. If you are planning a hike, take the conditions on the relevant trails into account.

In the Wider Homberg/Efze Destination

In the wider Homberg/Efze destination, St. Mary’s Town Church offers a distinct historical perspective. It is a Gothic monument and a three-aisled hall church; construction began around 1340. The Homberg Synod was held there in 1526, which is why the church is also known as the Reformation Church.

Hohenburg Castle stands on a basalt cone above Homberg/Efze and offers views as far as the Habichtswald, Knüll Nature Park and the forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. The castle’s well was once excavated 150 metres deep into the basalt, making it one of the deepest wells in Germany. A lighting system and an automatic water chute demonstrate its depth.

The Hohenburg Museum displays 7,000 exhibits from various periods in the castle’s history. The permanent exhibition covers the castle’s reconstruction, its history up to its destruction in the Thirty Years’ War, the construction and clearing of the castle well, and life in the castle. The town church, Hohenburg Castle and the museum broaden the view of history in the wider Homberg/Efze destination.
