Guxhagen lies just before the Fulda and Eder rivers meet in the Breite Aue. The Langenberge hills border the floodplain to the west, and the Söhre forest to the east. Between the river landscape, hiking trails and historic sites, you can tailor your stay to suit different interests.

If you are looking for accommodation in Guxhagen, you can first decide whether the monastery and memorial, routes through the landscape or activities on the water are your main priority. Local options offer different focuses: some lead to historic sights, while others combine exercise with views of the Fulda.

Hiking and Cycling in Guxhagen

The Guxhagen Historical Themed Hiking Trail combines landscape and local history. Its 13 information stations lead to historic sights such as the Breitenau monastery complex and the former synagogue. Along the way, the trail offers views, including of the Fulda river loop. This route brings the landscape and its historic landmarks into focus together.

Another hiking option is the blue-marked G2 loop, which connects Guxhagen with the districts of Albshausen and Wollrode. For cyclists, the Hessian long-distance cycle route R1 is a key option: it runs through the districts of Guxhagen, BĂĽchenwerra and Grebenau. The routes therefore differ both in their focus and in the districts they include.

Breitenau Monastery and Memorial

Breitenau Monastery was founded in 1113. Construction of the monastery church, which still stands today, began around 1120. The two dates mark different milestones in the monastery’s history: the founding of the complex and the start of construction on the church.

The tithe barn at the Breitenau Memorial houses a permanent exhibition by artist Stephan von Borstel about events during the Nazi era. The memorial’s educational program includes guided tours, walks, lectures and readings. There is no admission fee; donations are welcome. It is about a ten-minute walk from Guxhagen train station to the memorial. When planning a visit, it is advisable to check the latest dates and visitor information in advance, as specific dates and formats may vary.

The Kilianskapelle chapel in BĂĽchenwerra is another historic destination in the municipality of Guxhagen. It was rebuilt near the Fulda on the Hessian long-distance cycle route and inaugurated on September 19, 2010. During the summer season, from early June to late September, an event is held there on Sundays at 5 p.m., such as a devotional service, reading or concert. The seasonal program may change; check the dates in advance.

Canoe Tours and Outdoor Pool

Canoe tours are offered on the Eder and Fulda rivers in the municipality of Guxhagen. One provider in BĂĽchenwerra offers day and weekend tours that can be booked. There is also a specific route option for a trip on the Fulda: heading downstream from Melsungen, you can travel through the Fulda river loop; at the weir in Guxhagen, you can use the lock. This gives you two different reference points for planning: bookable tours and a described river route.

The Guxhagen outdoor pool, “Unter den Eichen,” offers a large sunbathing lawn with shady trees, swimming and non-swimmer pools, diving boards and a slide. Snacks are available at the kiosk. This is different from being out on the river: here, the focus is on the pools, sunbathing lawn and spending time in the outdoor pool grounds. The pool operates seasonally, and its facilities or offerings may change. Before your visit, check what will be available on your chosen date.
