For a trip to Schönstein, Schönstein Castle is the historical focal point; in the wider Gilserberg destination, trails complement the nature and geology themes. There are opportunities for hiking and cycling along and within the Jeust and Kellerwald heights. This places a single building and the trails of the larger destination side by side as different themes to explore.

Schönstein Castle and Its History

The late medieval founding of the castle is attributed to the Counts of Ziegenhain; its construction is probably dated to the years 1341 to 1350. Several-metre-high remnants of the walls have survived, and an information board presents known historical details. The municipality of Gilserberg lists Schönstein Castle ruins among its highlights and excursion destinations. The period places the castle in the late Middle Ages without specifying a single year of construction. The wall remains and information board provide further concrete clues for understanding its history.

Trails in the Wider Gilserberg Destination

Gilserberg is part of both Rotkäppchenland and Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park. The trails in the destination differ in their themes and descriptions: the GeoPfad Schönau focuses on the history of the Earth, while the Muschelkalkweg combines geological themes with former land use and nature conservation. Starting points and a trail’s position in relation to the surrounding settlement provide further guidance.

GeoPfad Schönau: Rocks and Continents

The GeoPfad Schönau leads to rock remnants exposed by erosion that once belonged to Africa. Its starting point is the car park in front of the community centre in Gilserberg-Schönau. The first stop explains the “journey” of the continents from which present-day Europe formed. The geological thread thus runs from the topic of continental movement to specific rock remnants. Check local conditions before setting out.

Muschelkalkweg Winterscheid: Circular Route, Nature and Culture

The Muschelkalkweg Winterscheid is a circular route approximately 5 km long and starts at the community centre in Winterscheid. Information boards cover the geological formation of the Middle Triassic period, dated to 244 to 235 million years ago, fossil organisms and former limestone quarrying. They also provide information about plant and animal species that today depend on Muschelkalk limestone. The themes thus range from the history of the Earth and former land use to present-day habitats.

The cultural monument “Trichterkalkofen” and former limestone quarries lie along the trail. In some sections, the route passes through the 43-hectare “Kalkkuppen bei Winterscheid” nature reserve. Particularly rare calcareous grasslands and orchid-beech forests are protected there. On a walk, you encounter different aspects of the area: a cultural monument, traces of former limestone quarrying and protected habitats.

Further Starting Points and Orientation

A hike on the Hochlandsteig can begin in any district of the municipality of Gilserberg. The Panorama-Rundweg Sachsenhausen runs mostly above the settlement of Sachsenhausen, which lies in the valley. The trails offer different points of reference to help you choose: the Muschelkalkweg is described as a circular route with an approximate length, the Hochlandsteig by its possible starting points, and the Panorama-Rundweg by its route above the settlement. You can first decide which of these points of reference will be useful for your planning.
