Ungedanken lies in the Eder Valley at the foot of BĂĽraberg, 280 m above sea level. Hiking trails and traces of different eras offer visitors a variety of points of interest; numerous anthills in the area around the U2 Ameisenweg are protected by nature conservation laws. When planning your trip, it is worth considering which trail length suits your plans and which historical topics you would like to explore further.

Choose hiking trails by distance

Five hiking trails are designated in Ungedanken: the 5.0 km BĂĽrabergtour, the 5.0 km Ameisenweg, the 6.5 km Rothhelmshausentour, the 4.5 km DoornkaathĂĽttenweg and the 14.5 km Grenzweg. Their lengths offer a straightforward basis for comparison: the DoornkaathĂĽttenweg is the shortest of the five, and the Grenzweg is the longest. These distances do not indicate walking times or difficulty; your first consideration when choosing a route is the distance you would like to cover.

The U1 BĂĽrabergtour starts at the multifunctional building. One section of this tour is part of the Ars Natura art trail. This gives you an artistic point of interest in addition to the choice of distance. The U2 Ameisenweg offers views of the Ostenbach Valley. Numerous anthills in the area around this trail are protected by nature conservation laws. Views and protected nature are two distinct aspects of the same route.

BĂĽraberg and local history

Since the Late Merovingian period, Büraberg was the site of the Büraburg, a Frankish fortress covering approximately 8 ha. The approximate area gives an indication of the size of the complex without claiming an exact boundary. Those interested in the town’s historical development will find another point of reference in a different period: in 1864, Ungedanken had its own synagogue.

The present-day Brigidenkirche is also connected with the history of the Diocese of Hesse: it served as its cathedral church. The fortress, church and local history thus offer different historical perspectives. They can be considered alongside one another without reducing them to the same era or the same function.

Travelling by train

Ungedanken railway station is on An der B 253. If you are planning to travel by train, check the departures and services for your travel date, as these may change.

Additional cultural attractions in the wider destination of Fritzlar

In the wider destination of Fritzlar, St. Peter’s Cathedral offers its own focus on art and church history. In 2004, it received the honorary title of papal basilica. The cathedral includes crypts containing the high tomb of Saint Wigbert, the cathedral library, the cloister, and the collegiate building with the cathedral museum and treasury.

The Evangelical Town Church, also known as the Minorite Church, offers a different architectural perspective. It is a two-aisled Gothic hall church; it was built in the first third of the 14th century following the founding of a Franciscan monastery in 1237. Since 1817, it has been the Evangelical Town Church. Its furnishings include a crucifixion group dating from around 1320, a fresco of Mary dating from around 1330 and a Baroque altar dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk from 1735. Concerts are held there throughout the year. A guided tour is available on request and by prior arrangement.

The Grey Tower is also part of Fritzlar’s cultural offerings: it is one of the tallest surviving municipal defensive towers in Germany. Its four floors display numerous details of Fritzlar’s history. The historic market square with its half-timbered ensemble and Roland’s Fountain, as well as the Kulturscheune, a venue for music, literature and art, offer further highlights. These cultural attractions are in the wider destination of Fritzlar; they are not features of Ungedanken.
