Silbersee brings together leisure activities and a chapter of recent landscape history in Frielendorf: it was created by open-cast lignite mining and subsequently flooded with groundwater. There are also opportunities for cycling and hiking, as well as insights into local history. When choosing what to do, consider which of these aspects of the town interests you most.

Silbersee and Mining History

Silbersee covers 8.2 ha and is 14 m deep at its deepest point. It was created by open-cast mining in the 1980s; the pit was then flooded with groundwater. Its origins also make the lake a place to learn about recent mining and landscape history. The mining trail is located in the Erlebniswelt am Silbersee and offers another opportunity to explore the subject of mining.

Leisure by the Water and Under One Roof

The small Silbersee-Bob amusement park is right on the shore of Silbersee. Its attractions include a bobsled track, boat rental, playground, petting animals, quad track, Nautic-Jet, and a sandy play area. Some attractions may vary. If a particular experience is important to your stay, check before visiting to see whether it is available.

The water facilities also differ in their specifications: the WellnessParadies am Silbersee has 151 m² of water area and a 53 m-long waterslide, while the Frielendorf outdoor pool has just under 1,000 m² of water area. The waterslide is a distinct additional feature of the WellnessParadies, while the larger water area stands out at the outdoor pool. These specific features make it possible to compare the two facilities without treating their offerings as identical.

Frielo-Land offers a different kind of experience: its 2,200 m² indoor space features attractions for children and families. These include a bungee and trampoline facility, bumper boats, pool tables, a ball-shooting game, climbing frames and slides, as well as a separate area for younger visitors. These attractions therefore offer a different setting from the lakeside facilities or the outdoor pool.

Cycling and Local History

Cycling routes in Frielendorf and the Erlebniswelt Silbersee pass through meadow valleys and along rivers. More challenging cycling routes extend into the foothills and higher elevations of the KnĂĽll hills. The options described range from rides through river and meadow landscapes to routes in higher areas. Hiking is also one of the leisure activities in Frielendorf.

The Frielendorf Museum Shop recreates a rural village shop from the early 20th century, using historic furnishings from old shops in Frielendorf. It is open by appointment, so arrange your visit in advance. This offers a glimpse of the town’s former shop interiors rather than another leisure attraction at Silbersee.

Frielendorf has been officially recognized as a climatic health resort since 2000. The Ascension Day market is also part of the town’s history: its tradition has continued without interruption since Landgrave Karl granted it market privileges in 1694. Today, the market is primarily a major leisure event and attracts thousands of visitors to Frielendorf every year. If you want to plan your trip around the market, check the current dates in advance.
