The Eder Cycle Path passes through Grifte at the confluence of the Eder and Fulda rivers. The route recommends stopping here before continuing about 2 km farther to Baunatal-Guntershausen and the Fulda Cycle Path/R1. If you are planning a cycling tour, you can include Grifte as a stop along the Eder Cycle Path; continuing towards Guntershausen makes it easier to plan your stages.
Cycling on the Eder Cycle Path
Another specific section of the route is the 2.3-kilometre stretch of the Eder Cycle Path between Wolfershausen and Grifte. It was officially opened on 22 July 2023; there is a place to rest for cyclists along the route. Check the condition of the rest area on site before setting off.
Understanding the character of the route
The Eder Cycle Path as a whole runs along quiet agricultural roads and sections of a paved former railway line. The route alternates between natural surfaces and asphalt, and also includes gentle climbs. It is generally considered suitable for cyclists. When planning, this means you should not assume the route is paved all the way. Check the latest route information before setting off, as details may change.
River landscape and regional context
The Eder river landscape in Haldorf provides a habitat for protected species such as beavers and kingfishers. A protected landscape area covers parts of the districts of Haldorf and Grifte. The Eder therefore shapes not only the route but also the landscape that surrounds these places.
Other places in the wider Edermünde destination
In Besse, within the wider Edermünde destination, the “Centre of Germany” stele stands in a meadow on the edge of the Langenberge hills. From there, the view stretches across the Chattengau region to the Söhre hills. The approximately 3 m-high basalt stele can be clearly seen from a small rest area with a bench and information board. Access is via the Habichtswald Nature Park hiking car park on Röder Weg in Besse.
Another place in the wider Edermünde destination is Haldorf. Above Wolfershausen, in the woodland within the Haldorf district, lies the Haldorf Horse Grave. The weathered inscription names Bella and Rosa and gives the date 13 February 1868. The Ederhöhenweg leads to the horse grave from Haldorf towards Wolfershausen, near Amselhof.
Edermünde also describes the “City-Countryside-River” circular tour for cyclists: it runs from Edermünde to Kassel and back along the Eder and Fulda rivers. The tour starts at Edermünde-Grifte station and follows the Eder Cycle Path towards Guntershausen. Along the way are typical North Hessian half-timbered villages, farm shops and small, cosy inns.
The Shepherd’s House in Haldorf also offers a glimpse into historic village life. The building was constructed in 1726; the last shepherd lived there until his death in 1948. The Shepherd’s House contains a local history museum with a permanent exhibition of objects from village life.
