Mittelheim combines tangible architectural history with hiking trails that start in the town.

Getting to Mittelheim

Direct trains run from Mittelheim station to Koblenz, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt am Main. Check the latest local transport information before setting out. These connections are a factor in planning your trip, alongside the local buildings and trails at your destination.

Architectural history in the town

The Reiz'scher Hof was built as a Renaissance building in 1559. It acquired its present floor plan through several alterations and extensions in the 18th and 19th centuries. The facade features a medallion with a relief head in the gable and a square sundial.

According to the Mittelheim chronicle, the Historic Town Hall was built in 1504. Together with the Reiz'scher Hof, it provides a second tangible point of reference for Mittelheim's architectural history. The courtyard's floor plan and facade details tell different parts of its story; for the town hall, its recorded year of construction is the notable date.

Hiking and cycling

The hike along the Flötenweg starts in Mittelheim at the historic basilica. In the wider destination of Oestrich-Winkel, the Flötenweg runs for about ten kilometres parallel to the Rhine, above the river through the vineyards of all the town's districts and on to Johannisberg Castle. The approximate route length and the starting point in town provide two concrete reference points when choosing a tour.

A section of the Rheingau Klostersteig starts at Oestrich-Winkel station in the Mittelheim district. It leads through the vineyards to the rest pavilion in the Honigberg, where it meets the Rheinsteig. The trails differ from the outset: the Flötenweg starts at the basilica, while the section of the Klostersteig described here starts at the station.

For cycling, the 240-kilometre R3 long-distance cycle route passes through Oestrich-Winkel. In the Oestrich-Winkel forest, trails invite visitors to hike and cycle; numerous circular routes start at the Kreistanne forest car park. Alongside the vineyard trails, visitors can therefore choose between forest trails and a cycling route in the wider destination.

The historic wine-loading crane on the Rhine embankment in Oestrich-Winkel dates from 1745. The Graues Haus in Winkel dates from the 12th century. Both buildings offer further insight into the destination's history without conflating them with the buildings in Mittelheim.

Wine-tasting stands can be found in Winkel by the ferry, in Oestrich by the crane and in Hallgarten. The winemakers and wines change weekly. The stands are available seasonally, and the selection may vary.

Schloss Vollrads offers a wine shop, an estate restaurant serving regional cuisine and a courtyard wine bar. The wine shop is located in the former coach house in the inner courtyard. During opening hours, guests can taste wines there without an appointment. Check the latest opening hours and offerings before visiting.
