Rhein-Über, wine tastings and an unusual organ stop give Lorch a distinctive blend of activity, wine and culture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Lorch, first choose a focus: hiking, tastings or specific cultural sites. Trail lengths, event dates and visiting conditions can all affect your day’s plans.

Hiking trails and access

The “Rhein-Über” hiking trail runs for 6.7 kilometres in Lorch and a further 6 kilometres on the other side of the Rhine in Niederheimbach. The section in Lorch is therefore 0.7 kilometres longer. In addition, numerous regional and long-distance hiking trails cross in Lorch. Burg Nollig can only be reached on foot via the Rheinsteig; it is not accessible by car. If you plan to visit the castle, make it a destination on a walking route.

Wine and bread on selected dates

There are two wine offerings at the historic Hilchenhaus. The Tourist Information team offers wine tastings featuring wines from various Lorch vintners. The town’s vinotheque stocks a wide selection of wines from almost all Lorch wineries and offers a small, impromptu tasting. Ask the Tourist Information about current tasting packages, and check with the vinotheque to find out whether tastings are currently available.

The Ransel Local History Museum is in the Ransel district, at the end of Kirchstraße. On selected dates, freshly baked bread from its own small bakehouse is sold on the museum grounds. Check the current baking schedule if you’d like to include the bread sale in your visit.

Culture with distinctive details

At St. Martin’s Church, the organ’s “Riesling stop” makes birdsong and opens a small door concealing two bottles of Riesling and two wine glasses. The church is usually open as far as the grille from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Check these usual hours on site when planning a visit.

The Knights’ Hall at the Hilchenhaus can be booked for conferences, family celebrations, concerts, civil wedding ceremonies and receptions. Lorch was also once a garrison town, another aspect of its history.

Museums and floral splendour

The Robert-Struppmann Museum collection consists mainly of sacred medieval sculptures dating from around 1400. It also displays archaeological finds from the Lorch area, including a Bronze Age neck ring and a child’s arm ring. The objects thus represent two distinctly different periods. Visits are by prior arrangement.

In Ransel, the Feuerpfeil family’s World Heritage Garden offers a splendid display of flowers. Along with the local history museum and its bakehouse, it gives the district different attractions that you can consider separately when planning your visit.

The wider setting: Rheingau-Taunus District

In the broader travel destination of Rheingau-Taunus District, the district’s area includes the municipal territories of Rüdesheim am Rhein and Lorch, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The cultural landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is shaped by steep river slopes, steep-slope and terraced vineyards, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine.

The Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes is also part of this regional setting. It crosses Rheingau-Taunus District for about 35 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. It runs for around 33 kilometres through the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park. The 14 Riesling loops are circular routes between 4 and 8 kilometres long, running between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein. They focus on Riesling, viticulture and the cultural landscape of the Rheingau; check the conditions on each route before setting out.
