A trip to Hohenstein can be planned around the history of its castle and the Limes, as well as a variety of trails. Hohenstein Castle is the most historically significant site and the municipality’s landmark. Traces of the Limes can be found in the districts of Breithardt, Born and Steckenroth. There are also Limes circular trails, a family yoga trail, a nature discovery trail, and opportunities for cycling, horse riding and circular walks. This gives you a choice of cultural history and different ways to get active as part of your travel plans.

Castle, Theatre and the Limes

The Hofgut Georgenthal in Hohenstein houses the Limes World Heritage educational centre. Each year in June and July, the TaunusbĂĽhne stages performances on the open-air stage in the courtyard of Hohenstein Castle; some seats are covered. Every year during the TaunusbĂĽhne Bad Schwalbach season, the courtyard of the Hohenstein Castle ruins becomes the setting for the castle festival. If you have a particular performance date in mind, check the programme before your trip.

The two Limes circular trails can be compared by length and number of information boards. The Georgenthal Limes circular trail starts at the Hofgut car park, is 5 km long and has nine information boards. The 5.5 km Hohenstein Limes circular trail has seven boards and takes in further visible Limes structures. The Georgenthal trail is therefore 500 metres shorter and has two more boards.

Choose Trails by Length and Theme

On the family yoga trail, you can choose between a short 1.3 km loop and a longer 2.4 km loop. Both start at the signboard by the municipal hall. Children and adults can try yoga exercises at 14 stations. The nature discovery trail has a different focus: it is an interactive learning site with stations where visitors can take part in activities; it starts in Breithardt.

For a considerably longer route, there is the approximately 40 km horse-riding and circular hiking trail. It passes through Hohenstein’s landscapes and by cultural landmarks such as the Limes and the castle. Compared with the two Limes circular trails, this is a much longer route option.

The Aar Valley Cycle Path leads to Hohenstein-Born via a short, steep climb of up to 9%, then continues on flatter terrain through Hohenstein-Breithardt. This change in elevation profile distinguishes the cycling route from the circular trails mentioned above and provides a specific point to consider when choosing a route.

Recurring Events

Every year on the last Sunday in May, AarstraĂźe (B 54) is closed to motorised traffic for one day. The route also passes through Hohenstein and is reserved exclusively for cycling, scootering and inline skating that day. The exact date and programme vary from year to year; check the dates for the year of your trip.

The events calendar therefore offers different times of year to plan around: AarstraĂźe closes at the end of May, while the TaunusbĂĽhne performances take place every year in June and July. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check your intended dates against the relevant event schedule.
