In Heidenrod, the range of themes spans Limes events and guided hikes to the route to Holzhausen Roman Fort, the Zorn Arboretum and the Baroque architectural history of Zorn Church. These differences are useful for planning: the options include interpretation and events, a hike with a stated distance, a collection of tree species or a historic building.

Experience the Limes in a variety of ways

The Heidenrod local history association brings the Limes to life through various events, talks and guided hikes. A talk offers a different approach from a guided hike that explores the subject. If the Limes is to be a focus of your trip, check in advance which events and hikes fit your travel dates.

Hiking route, tree park and architectural history

The Holzhäuser Weg runs mostly through woodland and a wildlife-rich area with fallow deer, leading to the remains of Holzhausen Roman Fort. The route is listed as 6.0 km and 2 hours for experienced hikers. This makes it possible to plan the hike as a separate part of your trip with a specific time frame. As trail conditions can change, check the latest route information before setting out.

The Zorn Arboretum offers a different perspective: the park is located at an elevation of 500 metres above sea level on the high plateau of Grauer Kopf. It contains more than 60 tree species from the Northern Hemisphere. The two nature-based themes are therefore quite distinct: the Holzhäuser Weg focuses on distance, duration and the destination of the Roman fort; the arboretum focuses on tree species.

Zorn Church also adds a cultural attraction with a clearly stated date. It was built in the Baroque style in 1740–1741 after the previous building had fallen into disrepair. The new building and the reason for its construction are connected, giving the church a specific architectural history.

Regional perspective: Rheingau-Taunus District

As a broader context, Rheingau-Taunus District offers another perspective on the Limes. The Upper German-Raetian Limes runs through the district for about 35 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. Within the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park, it runs for around 33 kilometres. The approximate lengths refer to different geographical areas: the district and the nature park, respectively.

Another regional landscape is shaped by the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Rheingau-Taunus District is part of it through the municipal areas of Rüdesheim am Rhein and Lorch. The World Heritage cultural landscape is defined by steep river slopes, steep-slope and terraced vineyards, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine. Alongside the Limes, this makes the cultural landscape shaped by the river and winegrowing another theme in Rheingau-Taunus District.

There are also 14 Riesling Loops for hiking in the Rheingau. The circular routes are 4 to 8 kilometres long, run between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein, and focus on Riesling, winegrowing and the cultural landscape. Unlike the single Holzhäuser Weg, they form a regional network of several themed circular routes.
