A nearly two-kilometre-long educational trail, a forest discovery trail with eleven stations and a historic hand-operated lever trolley offer different experiences in Aarbergen. At the Hennethal Landwehr, the focus is on history and landscape; the forest discovery trail explores the relationships within the forest, while the sculpture trail features works by various artists. If you would rather take a ride than walk a trail, you can consider the trolley in the Aartal. The circular trail’s length and duration, as well as booking the trolley in advance, are specific points to consider when planning.

Landwehr and Circular Trail near Hennethal

The Hennethal Landwehr is a rampart-and-ditch system around 325 metres long. It most likely dates from the late Middle Ages and was rediscovered in 2003. It lies at the highest point of the circular trail, on the “Platte”. The nearly two-kilometre-long educational trail to the Landwehr passes through an area of historical, geographical and natural interest, with information boards along the way.

The circular trail starts at the car park on the L 3031, at the Hennethal exit, between Kettenbach and Daisbach. It is 1,830 metres long, takes 45 to 60 minutes and has an elevation gain of 85 metres. The route is easy to moderately difficult; sturdy footwear is recommended when it is wet. Its duration and difficulty provide a useful framework for planning.

Forest Stations and Sculptures

The forest discovery trail is three kilometres long and has eleven stations for visitors of all ages. The stations offer insights into the relationships and distinctive features of the forest. Along the sculpture trail, you can view eleven sculptures by various artists. You can choose between two different themes: the forest and its connections, explored at the stations, or artworks along the sculpture trail.

Plan a Trolley Ride and Horse Riding

In the Aartal, you can ride a historic hand-operated lever trolley between Aarbergen-Michelbach in Hesse and Diez in Rhineland-Palatinate. You must book a time in advance; confirm the details with the operator before your arrival. Horse riding is available in an indoor arena or outdoors. Annual competitions invite you to take part or watch; check the current programme with the riding club.

A Wider Perspective: Rheingau-Taunus District

As a broader travel destination, the Rheingau-Taunus District offers a wider perspective on culture and landscape. The district, through the municipal areas of RĂĽdesheim am Rhein and Lorch, forms part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. Steep river slopes, vineyards on steep slopes and terraces, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine shape this cultural landscape.

Another point of interest is the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes. It runs through the Rheingau-Taunus District for about 35 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. Within the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park, the Limes runs for around 33 kilometres. The two lengths refer to different areas: one to the district and the other to the nature park.

Plan Your Stay and Accommodation

When looking for a holiday apartment in Aarbergen, it helps to first check which activities are tied to specific dates. You must book a time in advance for the historic hand-operated lever trolley; for horse-riding competitions, ask the riding club about the current programme. You can then fit your other interests—historic Landwehr, forest stations or sculptures—into your plans. This way, your stay can be arranged around the actual dates and the topics that interest you.
