Wetter (Hesse) combines historic sites in the old town with opportunities for cycling and hiking in the region. The collegiate church on Klosterberg, the former synagogue, and the Diebsturm tower represent different chapters in the town’s history. This raises a clear question when planning your trip: should your stay focus mainly on Wetter itself, or would you also like to plan excursions in the wider Marburg-Biedenkopf travel destination?

Old Town and City History

The collegiate church has stood on Klosterberg since the 13th century. Another historic site is the former synagogue: the town of Wetter acquired it in 2000, and it was extensively restored as part of the old town’s renovation. The Association for the Support and Promotion of the Former Synagogue in Wetter (Träger- und Förderverein ehemalige Synagoge Wetter e. V.) is committed to its preservation and use as a memorial site, place of learning, and venue for cultural encounters.

The Diebsturm tower adds a different episode to the town’s history. In the 18th century, citizens of Wetter were imprisoned there; the tower was probably used as a prison until the beginning of the 19th century. You can explore the historic old town on your own or as part of a guided tour. So you can either set off independently or choose a guided exploration.

Cycling and Hiking Options

The 21-kilometre Treisbachtal cycle route runs from Biedenkopf to Wetter, or in the opposite direction. It is an option if you’re looking for a clearly defined route between two places for your excursion.

On the Extratour Stirnhelle route, the viewpoints at Stirnhelle (387 m), Gerlachsberg (387 m), and Am Rienert (285 m) offer views across the Burgwald forest, Mellnau Castle, and the town of Wetter. Stirnhelle and Gerlachsberg are at the same elevation; at 285 metres, Am Rienert is lower. The route can therefore also be assessed by its named viewpoints and elevation figures.

The adjacent Burgwald forest, with Christenberg, is an excursion destination near Wetter. It offers another way to plan a trip into the surrounding area in addition to a walk around the town.

Regional Additions in Marburg-Biedenkopf

The wider Marburg-Biedenkopf travel destination extends beyond Wetter. The district has diverse low mountain landscapes, numerous half-timbered villages, and historic and modern towns. This provides a broader regional setting for travelers who want to explore landscapes and other destinations as well as local history.

The 18-kilometre Himmelsbergtour is a premium hiking trail in the Burgwald region and leads through the villages of Burgholz and Himmelsberg. Its route passes through forests, meadows, and fields, as well as a Natura 2000 protected area. In the same wider travel destination, Perfstausee offers a different kind of activity: non-motorized boats are permitted there, including stand-up paddleboards and canoes. A walking path also runs around the lake; it is open year-round and suitable for strollers.
