Biedenkopf combines castle history and half-timbered architecture with nature experiences on the Sackpfeife and at the Perfstausee. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the visiting arrangements for cultural attractions in mind: the Schenkbarsches Haus private museum can be visited by appointment, and city tours are offered seasonally. If you are planning your overnight stay around a particular visit, it is best to confirm the date in advance.

Castle history and historic houses

Landgrafenschloss Biedenkopf was built in the mid-15th century by Heinrich III of Hesse-Marburg and is one of the state of Hesse’s important cultural monuments. An architectural history tour takes you through the entire castle and explains the building’s distinctive features. Check the current tour arrangements before your visit. The castle is also home to the Hinterlandmuseum: founded in 1908 as a regional museum, it presents the regional and cultural history of the Hinterland. Its main areas of focus include the history of industry, transport, agriculture and crafts, as well as traditional dress, domestic life and everyday culture.

The Schenkbarsches Haus tells a different chapter in the history of architecture. This five-storey half-timbered building has two lower floors dating from 1491; Amtmann Schenkbar had the three upper floors added in 1610. By appointment, the private museum opens the interior of Biedenkopf’s oldest house and its icon collection to visitors. There are no regular opening hours. The two venues offer different kinds of visits: the castle combines architectural history with a regional museum, while the Schenkbarsches Haus focuses on its historic interiors and icon collection.

Half-timbered architecture, art and marionette theatre

In Biedenkopf-Eckelshausen, the Schartenhof is a historically significant half-timbered building in the Marburg-Biedenkopf region of Hesse, more than 300 years old. Today, the Schartenhof is a centre for creativity and is home to art, culture and music. Its cultural programme includes a marionette theatre staging classical operas. If you plan to attend a performance during your trip, check the current schedule.

Sackpfeife: views and hiking trails

The Kaiser Wilhelm Tower marks the highest point on the Sackpfeife. From its viewing platform, you can enjoy panoramic views across the heights of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park and the Marburg region. From the viewpoint on the Sackpfeife, the view extends across the ridges of the Slate Mountains and the Marburg uplands; on clear days, it reaches as far as the Taunus. The large car park on the Sackpfeife is the starting point for three circular hiking trails of different lengths. You can choose a route to suit your preferred distance; check trail conditions before setting out. The Biedenkopf Baby Forest, with 55 mountain and Norway maples at present, is also on the Sackpfeife.

Perfstausee: waterside recreation and natural habitat

The Perfstausee is in Breidenstein, a district of Biedenkopf. You can take non-motorised boats out on the water and use stand-up paddleboards. There is also a beach volleyball court and a disc golf course by the lake. One section of the lake is part of the “Im Wehr bei Breidenstein” nature reserve, which provides protected habitat, especially for waterfowl. The Perfstausee is also at the intersection of numerous regional and long-distance cycling routes, making it a popular destination for cycling trips. Here, water sports and activities on land meet a protected habitat for birds.

Dates for special experiences

The Biedenkopf Grenzgang takes place every seven years. Participants organise a three-day festival at historic woodland sites, bringing locals and visitors together. If you are planning a trip to Biedenkopf specifically for the Grenzgang, check when the next one is due before arranging your accommodation.

A city tour lasting around two hours explores Hesse’s architectural history through the example of Biedenkopf and also introduces visitors to how to read a half-timbered house in Central Hesse. Tours are offered seasonally on Sundays; arrange dates with the tour guide. On the play area at the shelter in Biedenkopf-Kombach, games bring to life the true story of the Kombach post robbers. Contact the organiser to take part.
