Schlüchtern brings together a range of attractions for a stay: the history of the Benedictine monastery, museums and guided tours at Brandenstein Castle, as well as trails at Acis and the landscaped park at Ramholz Castle. You can tailor your itinerary to your interests and choose from cultural topics, nature trails and guided activities.

Monastery History and City Tours

Architectural evidence clearly indicates that the Benedictine monastery in Schlüchtern was founded before 800. A guided tour of the monastery covers the Carolingian crypt, the late Romanesque Chapel of St. Andrew and architectural styles from the Carolingian period to the Renaissance. This gives you an insight into different construction phases within a single topic.

A city tour takes you to the former monastery, St. Michael’s Church, the town hall, the former synagogue, Linsengasse and Schmiedsgasse. A separate tour on Schlüchtern’s Jewish history visits the medieval Jewish cemetery, the new synagogue dating from the end of the 19th century, and other places connected to Jewish history. This offers a thematic focus alongside the tour of various sites around the city. Tour booking details may change, so it is best to check them before your visit.

Brandenstein Castle and Museums

At Brandenstein Castle, the Wooden Implements Museum displays around 800 exhibits of wooden household and farming implements. The collection focuses on specific objects from everyday life and work. The castle also offers beer brewing demonstrations using historical equipment. A rustic meal may also be included; check the details with the provider in advance, as arrangements may change.

Another guided tour at Brandenstein Castle covers Philipp Franz von Siebold’s studies of Japan and his efforts to promote the exchange of scientific knowledge between Europe and Japan. This adds a topic in the history of science and culture to the insights into local history.

At the Bergwinkel Museum, selected exhibits invite visitors to take part. These include a model railway on the third floor. Important for planning: For heritage protection reasons, the museum is not accessible to visitors with disabilities.

Forest Trails at Acis and the Park Landscape at Ramholz

At Acis Spring, there is a forest nature trail, a botanical trail and a nature experience trail. The forest experience trail is around 300 metres long, with several activity stations along the way. It is free to use year-round. Its short route and stations set it apart from the other two trails, which are also located at Acis Spring.

Another hiking option is the Spessartspur “RAMHOLZER SCHLOSSPARK,” described as having limited accessibility barriers. It starts and ends at the “Schloss Ramholz” hiking car park on Parkstraße in Vollmerz. Trail conditions and signage may change, so it is best to check them before setting out. Ramholz Castle is surrounded by an approximately 80-hectare landscaped park with small buildings and a pavilion. The park offers a distinct landscape experience alongside the trails at Acis.

Herb Walk with Optional Tasting

Near Schlüchtern, the herb walk “Out and About with the Herb Witch” introduces visitors to the uses of plants from the surrounding area and explains what they are suitable for. After the walk, a tasting of wild herb delicacies is available for an additional fee of 3 euros per person. As it is optional, it is best to confirm the details when making an enquiry.
