At the Wartbaum above Nidderau, a striking natural landmark meets a viewpoint steeped in history. The city’s trails also offer a variety of experiences, ranging from short loops with interactive stations to longer routes through the landscape and local history. When planning, it is therefore helpful to consider both the theme and the stated route length.
The Wartbaum and trails through the landscape
The Wartbaum on the Hohe StraĂźe is freely accessible year-round, and visiting is free of charge. A guided tour of the field flora reserve at the Wartbaum is a separate offering: on June 29, 2026, the Nidderau city environmental office announced that it offers such tours. Registration is requested by email. If you are planning a tour, confirm the date with the city in advance.
The 38-kilometer Hohe Straße Regional Park Route is signposted in both directions and largely follows the course of an old trade route. In Nidderau, it intersects with the railway cycle path and the Bonifatius Route. Another option is the 16.9-kilometer Spessart Trail “NidderAuenFährte”: It starts at Eichen station, passes through the Nidderau Nature Forest and across meadows with views extending to Frankfurt, the Taunus, and the Spessart. The route returns along the Nidder and partly passes through the Wetterau bird sanctuary.
The Huguenot and Waldensian Trail also passes through Nidderau: its Main-Spessart regional loop runs through the city districts of Eichen, Windecken, and Heldenbergen. The trail is a Council of Europe cultural long-distance cycle route. So, alongside the nature and landscape routes described above, there are also cycling routes with a cultural focus.
Numerous stations along the nature discovery trail invite visitors to experiment, touch, and smell. It consists of two independent loops, each about three kilometers long, that pass through the Windecken and Ostheim districts. The trail starts at the information board by the playground on MĂĽhlberg in Windecken. The Planet Trail offers a different thematic experience: a scale model of the solar system, it runs from Willi-Salzmann-Halle in Windecken along Konrad-Adenauer-Allee to the Catholic church in Heldenbergen. The walk is informative for visitors of all ages.
An overview map showing designated walking and jogging routes of varying lengths is located at the large forest parking lot by the burial forest. It can help you choose a route based on its stated length.
Local history in Windecken, Heldenbergen, and Erbstadt
In Windecken, the old town and the Nidder are closely connected geographically: the old town lies in the Katzbach valley and is bordered by the Nidder to the north. Despite extensive destruction during the Thirty Years’ War, its medieval layout has been almost entirely preserved. Windecken is also home to significant Iron Age burial grounds. The Hexenturm and the town wall are important historical monuments; the tower is considered a landmark and a defining part of local identity.
The Catholic church is a defining feature of the historic center of Heldenbergen. The center also includes the rectory, two old school buildings, half-timbered houses and farmsteads, as well as houses once occupied by craftspeople, day laborers, and agricultural workers. Visitors exploring the town’s history will therefore find not just individual buildings, but a described mix of different buildings and former occupations.
Another architectural ensemble is in the city district of Erbstadt: Pfaffenhof is laid out in an almost square shape and is located on today’s main street. The differences between Windecken, Heldenbergen, and Erbstadt provide several specific ways to explore local history, without making a single type of building the focus of the entire visit.
A route featuring apple wine and fruit orchards
The Main-Kinzig regional loop of the Hessian Apple Wine and Orchard Route passes through Nidderau. Along the route are natural meadows with orchards, teaching gardens and educational trails, cider presses and restaurants, direct marketers, natural monuments, and other attractions. The loop is currently being revised; take this into account when planning and check the latest status before committing to this route.
