Forest-edge trails, dense woodland and sweeping views define Hasselroth’s natural side. The area also has a nature reserve and village history to explore at the local history museum and other cultural sites. When planning your visit, you can choose between a loop with changing landscapes, a panoramic trail, a longer cultural route and individual historical themes. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests without combining all the attractions into a single tour.

Forest Trails, Views and Nature Conservation

The Niedermittlauer Berkopp Loop combines scenic forest-edge trails with dense woodland, the site of the former geographical centre of Europe and the nature reserve in the old clay pits. The route brings together several landscape and local-history highlights. If you’re looking for a hike with a variety of impressions rather than just one viewpoint, the Berkopp Loop is a good option.

The panoramic trail on Niedermittlauer Heiligenkopf offers a different focus. From there, you can see Hasselroth and the Freigericht Bay, as well as Frankfurt and the Taunus. The views take in nearby towns and landscapes alongside more distant destinations. The distinction is useful when choosing a route: the Berkopp Loop combines woodland with named points of interest, while the panoramic trail is defined by its views.

The 11-hectare Hässeler Weiher nature reserve lies north of Neuenhaßlau. Its protected status is due to its diverse plant life and birdlife. Here, the focus is not on distant views, but on the area’s importance for plants and birds. These natural features give Hässeler Weiher its own appeal alongside the woodland and viewpoint trails.

If you’re planning a longer walk, the European Cultural Route Hasselroth is an option, covering about 14 to 16 km. It passes through Gondsroth, Neuenhaßlau and Niedermittlau, taking in their sights along the way. You can start at the Hessian Youth Forest Home or the Edelweißhütte at Wingert. The route passes through several towns; check local route information for current conditions before setting out.

Museum and Village History in Niedermittlau

The Hasselroth Local History Museum opened in 1988 in the schoolhouse in Niedermittlau, built in 1847. It presents life and work in the villages of Gondsroth, Neuenhaßlau and Niedermittlau up to the end of the 1950s. Exhibits on local diamond cutting and cigar production illustrate the area’s economic history; a hand-operated fire engine from 1894 is another dated exhibit. The museum complements the routes and landscapes with the everyday and economic history of the three villages.

The museum offers museum tours and guided walks around the town, particularly for kindergarten, school and youth groups. Tours can include activities such as doing the laundry as people did 100 years ago. If you’d like to arrange a tour, contact the museum directly to coordinate the details.

Another cultural landmark in Niedermittlau is St. Lawrence’s Church. Its interior is simply designed, reflecting the strict Reformed principles. The church offers a different perspective on local history from the exhibits at the local history museum: the focus here is on the connection between religious principles and the design of the interior.
