Salt history, half-timbered houses and routes into the countryside offer different ways to experience Bad Orb during a stay. The connection between salt production and the spa town is particularly striking: the “Brine & Salt” trail takes you past eleven stops through the spa gardens and around the old town. It traces Bad Orb’s development from a salt-producing town to a spa town and explains the significance of “white gold” in the past and present. Allow just over two hours for the walk.

Brine, Salt and the Town’s History

The graduation tower in Bad Orb’s spa gardens is an open-air inhalatorium measuring 155 metres long, 12 metres wide and 18 metres high, with health-promoting effects. Together with the trail, it is a focal point for anyone interested in the history of salt and the town’s development into a spa destination.

The Museum Bad Orb focuses on the town’s historical development. Housed in the former castle, it explores the heyday of “white gold” and the history of salt production. The trail and the museum offer different perspectives: the walk presents the subject in the spa gardens and around the old town, while the museum places it in the context of Bad Orb’s history.

Half-Timbered Houses and an Old Town Tour

Kirchgasse is Bad Orb’s last street made up entirely of half-timbered houses. At the end stands the “Smallest House”, an extension in front of the main building itself. The lane thus offers both a streetscape of half-timbered houses and a building with an unusual name.

A tour of the historic old town with the Orber salt producer leads to the 200-year-old saltworks. If requested, the tour can include a tasting of local Orber delicacies. The tasting is an optional addition to the visit to the saltworks.

Gardens, a Labyrinth and Walking Routes

The educational herb garden offers a different focus. It was created in 2000 as a natural educational and display garden to mark the spa gardens’ 100th anniversary; more than 200 different herbs and medicinal plants grow there. At Quellenring, near the Philippsquelle spring, there is a walk-through labyrinth with seven circuits; a sycamore maple stands at its centre.

The Spessart Trail 3 runs through Bad Orb’s spa gardens. The Bad Orb barefoot trail offers a different way to explore: it leads barefoot through the Orb valley’s floodplain landscape and has numerous activity stations. A route through the spa gardens and a trail through the floodplain landscape thus offer different nature and activity experiences.

The Haseltal valley in Bad Orb is a destination for nature outings. A path along the Hasel leads from the Old Railway Station, at the start of the old town, into the valley. On the Molkenberg, the nine-metre-high Wartturm serves as a viewpoint and a starting point for hikes. The outings have different focuses: the path along the Hasel leads into the valley, while the Wartturm combines a viewpoint with a starting point for hikes.
