For a hike in Hünfelden, the Kirberg 3 (KI 3) offers a clearly described point of reference.

Hiking in Hünfelden

The hiking trail is 10.6 kilometers long and runs mostly along wider, well-maintained forest and farm roads. In the final third, views open up towards the Taunus and the Limburg Basin. The distance and surface provide guidance for planning your day; the views add a scenic highlight in the later part of the route. If you choose a hike based on distance and trail character, the KI 3 offers two concrete criteria.

Routes in the wider Limburg-Weilburg destination

The wider Limburg-Weilburg destination offers other hiking and cycling routes in various locations. In Runkel, the Lahn Hiking Trail runs alongside the permanent hiking trails “In the Steep Slopes of the Lahn” and “Through the Kerkerbach Valley.” For the Hadamar area, the 2024 district brochure lists seventeen circular hiking trails with four different starting points. If you are planning a cycling tour instead of a hike, you can compare routes of different lengths: Route Plan 1 is 48 kilometers long and moderately difficult. It leads from Limburg through the Kerkerbach Valley and the Hessian Westerwald, then via Hadamar back to Limburg. At 245 kilometers, the Lahn Cycle Route is considerably longer, certified with four stars, and very well connected to public transport by the Lahn Valley Railway. Check route conditions and timetables for specific tours.

Art, architecture and technology

The wider Limburg-Weilburg destination features cultural attractions with a variety of focuses. The Rosenhang Museum in Weilburg was established in the former August Helbig brewery. Covering around 2,000 square meters, it showcases contemporary art in changing exhibitions; studios are also available to artists. Weilburg Castle was built on a mountain spur high above the Lahn and is one of Hesse’s most significant cultural monuments. Weilburg’s ship tunnel adds a technological highlight: it was built between 1844 and 1847 and is Germany’s oldest and longest navigable shipping tunnel. Together with the cup-shaped lock at its lower entrance, it forms a unique technical monument. In Runkel, the medieval castle, first mentioned in 1159, still shapes the townscape today. The historic Lahn Bridge dates from 1448 and is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn to have been preserved in its original condition.

Nature and water experiences

Nature and water experiences are also among the themes of the wider Limburg-Weilburg destination. The “Tiergarten Weilburg” wildlife park has a 400-year tradition and offers the chance to observe native animal species in a natural setting, including bears, wolves, moose, wisent and aurochs, as well as red deer, wild boar, ibex and mouflon. Kubach Crystal Cave is the only crystal cave in Germany. It is surrounded by 350-million-year-old limestone and filled with numerous crystals and pearl-shaped stalactites.

For the Runkel canoe station, the 2024 district brochure describes tours for individuals and groups, lasting one or several days, using Canadian canoes and kayaks. The offer described includes equipment, an introductory session and passenger transfers, as well as special offers for groups and families; check the current packages before travelling. In Weilburg, canoeists can pass through the only navigable ship tunnel still in use.
