A monument at the playground and remnants of former loading ramps in the forest give Hintermeilingen a tangible connection to its history. There are also three Nordic walking routes along the old embankment of the Kerkerbach Railway. Their different lengths and viewpoints make it easier to choose a route; the annual fair in mid-August adds a date of its own to your travel plans.
Locomotive and Loading Ramps
The former mine locomotive and mine wagon have been preserved as a monument at the playground; their track gauge is 600 millimetres. Remnants of the former loading ramps remain in the forest. These are two distinct forms of historic heritage: a preserved vehicle ensemble and structural remains of a former facility. The track gauge is a technical detail of the monument; the loading ramp remains are structural traces of earlier use. The condition and accessibility of the remains may change. If you would like to include them in your visit, check local information in advance. Track gauge refers to the distance between the rails.
Three Nordic Walking Routes
The three Nordic walking routes start in Hintermeilingen and follow the old embankment of the Kerkerbach Railway. They pass fields and go through woodland; all three also follow the old embankment on the return leg. N1 is 5.6 kilometres long and offers a view of the former loading station. N2 covers 7.2 kilometres and N3 9.8 kilometres; both offer a view towards the Maria clay pit. N1 is the shortest route, N3 the longest, and N2 lies between them. The difference in length between N1 and N3 is 4.2 kilometres; N2 is 1.6 kilometres longer than N1 and 2.6 kilometres shorter than N3. This lets you use route length and the respective viewpoint as two separate criteria when choosing. Fields and woodland form the common landscape setting for the routes. Check local route information before setting out.
The Annual Fair
The fair takes place annually around mid-August and is considered the village’s biggest celebration. This period is a rough guide, not a specific date. Check the dates and programme for your intended year of travel before planning your trip around it. If you are planning to visit at another time, the routes and historic remnants may offer different points of interest.
Choose a Holiday Apartment Based on Your Reason for Travelling
If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Hintermeilingen, it helps to decide first what is bringing you here: should the fair determine your travel dates, or should the Nordic walking routes be the main focus? For the fair, the specific date in the relevant year is key; for the routes, you can compare their length and viewpoints. The historic traces also offer a focus of their own.
